Chapter 4 - The Public Reckoning

Three days later, I was discharged from the hospital.

Alexander personally carried Milo down the private elevator in a soft silk bundle, while I walked beside him, wrapped in a plush cashmere coat he had bought for me.

Outside the hospital entrance, a wall of news reporters, camera crews, and paparazzi had gathered behind velvet ropes. The news of the Halbrook corporate collapse—and the shocking revelation that the quiet, neglected daughter had married the country’s most powerful billionaire—had completely dominated national business headlines.

As we stepped into the bright afternoon sunlight, my mother, Lorraine, suddenly broke through the police line, her clothes disheveled, her hair unkempt, tears streaming down her face.

"Sienna! Sienna, please!" she screamed, rushing toward us before Alexander’s security team blocked her path, holding her back six feet away.

I stopped. Alexander turned beside me, his arm wrapping around my waist, his body positioning itself between my mother and our son.

"Sienna, look at me!" Lorraine sobbed, reaching her trembling hands out toward Milo. "I’m your mother! Please... tell the federal prosecutor to drop the charges against Preston! He can't survive in prison! And your father... they froze our bank accounts! We can't even pay the mortgage on the estate!"

I looked at my mother.

For thirty-four years, I had craved her approval. I had worked double shifts, kept my head down, lived quietly, and tried to earn a tiny fraction of the affection she showered on my brother. And three days ago, when I was at my most vulnerable moment—lying in a hospital bed holding a newborn—she had looked at my son and declared him fatherless and worthless.

The pain she had inflicted on me for decades was finally gone, replaced by a deep, impenetrable clarity.

"You told me three days ago that actions have consequences, Mother," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet crowd of reporters. "You told me that I created my situation and had to live with it."

"I was wrong! I didn't know!" Lorraine wailed, dropping to her knees on the concrete pavement. "We didn't know Alexander was the father! We thought you were alone!"

"That is the difference between us, Lorraine," Alexander said, his voice cold as steel as he looked down at her. "Sienna didn't care whether I had forty billion dollars or forty dollars. She loved me when we met in a quiet compliance office five years ago. But you... you only care about power. And now you have none."

"Sienna, please!" Lorraine begged, weeping loudly. "Let me hold my grandson! Just once! Let me hold Milo!"

I looked down at the tiny bundle in Alexander’s arms. Milo was sleeping peacefully, blissfully unaware of the cruelty of the woman begging on the sidewalk.

"You had your chance to hold him, Lorraine," I said softly. "You chose a fourteen-percent share of a fraudulent company instead. Live with your choice."

I turned my back on her.

Alexander opened the door of our dark custom Maybach, helping me inside before settling in beside me with our son. The heavy doors clicked shut, blocking out the screams, the flashing cameras, and the crumbling ruins of the family that had tried to destroy me.
