Chapter 3 - The Empire Crumbles

By noon, the story had already breached the high walls of Charleston’s elite society.

While I rested in the luxury suite Alexander had cleared on the top floor of the hospital—guarded by four private security officers—a economic earthquake was shattering the Halbrook family headquarters downtown.

My brother, Preston Halbrook, was sitting in his corner office overlooking the harbor, sipping expensive scotch and reviewing the draft press release for his impending promotion to CEO.

He had no idea that his world had already ended.

The glass doors of his executive suite were shoved open without warning. Two federal marshals, accompanied by three forensic accountants from the Securities and Exchange Commission and Alexander Vance’s chief legal council, Marcus Sterling, stepped into the room.

"Preston Halbrook?" Marshal Davis asked, pulling a laminated badge from his coat.

Preston stood up, sneering as he set his scotch glass down on the mahogany desk. "What is the meaning of this? Do you know who my father is? We are in the middle of a private acquisition board meeting!"

"Your board meeting is canceled, Mr. Halbrook," Marcus Sterling announced, stepping forward and opening a leather briefcase. "I am representing Vance Global Infrastructure, the primary receiver for Halbrook Urban Partners. As of eleven o'clock this morning, the United States District Court signed an emergency freeze order on all personal and corporate assets belonging to you, Warren Halbrook, and Pinnacle Holdings LLC."

Preston’s cocky smile withered instantly. "What? That’s impossible! My father went to the hospital to secure Sienna’s fourteen percent! She signed the release!"

"She didn't sign anything, Preston," Marcus replied with a ice-cold smile. "In fact, Mrs. Sienna Vance—formerly Sienna Halbrook—has just submitted a four-hundred-page criminal whistle-blower deposition to the Department of Justice, accompanied by complete bank routing numbers for your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman."

"Mrs. Vance?!" Preston shrieked, his voice cracking like a child's. "What the hell are you talking about?! Sienna isn't married! She's an unemployed unwed mother!"

The door opened behind the marshals, and Warren Halbrook shuffled into the room. He looked as though he had aged twenty years in four hours. His tie was loosened, his eyes bloodshot, his shoulders slumped in total defeat.

"Father!" Preston rushed around his desk, grabbing Warren’s arm. "What is this lawyer talking about? Tell them to get out of my office!"

Warren slowly looked up at his favored son—the boy he had spent twenty-five years grooming, shielding, and favoring over me.

"It’s over, Preston," Warren whispered, his voice trembling violently. "Sienna married Alexander Vance two years ago in secret. She wasn't hiding in shame. She was waiting for us to commit the final wire fraud so Vance could seize the entire firm."

Preston staggered back against his mahogany desk, knocking over his scotch glass. The dark amber liquid pooled across his expensive leather blotter, dripping slowly onto his velvet carpet.

"Vance?" Preston gasped, his breath coming in ragged hitches. "No... no, Vance was supposed to fund our new harbor development project! He promised us fifty million in venture capital!"

"He funded the project," Marcus Sterling corrected, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his pocket and handing them to the federal marshal. "To ensure the paper trail led directly to your personal signature. Preston Halbrook, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, bank fraud, and corporate embezzlement."

As the heavy steel cuffs clicked around Preston’s wrists, he began to scream, kicking at the chair, looking at his father for help that would never come.

"Father! Do something! Call the Governor! Call our attorneys!" Preston wailed as the marshals dragged him toward the private elevator.

Warren Halbrook couldn't answer. He slumped into the chair his son had just vacated, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the Charleston harbor—where Alexander Vance’s colossal cargo ships were docked, bearing the emblem of the man who had just destroyed his life.
