Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Doorway

Warren Halbrook’s words hovered in the sterile hospital room like a poison cloud.

"Sign today," my father repeated, leaning over the side rail of my bed, his tailored gray suit pristine, his expensive cologne battling the smell of antiseptic. "Or you receive nothing from us. No allowance, no family support, and certainly no share of your grandfather's estate when your mother and I pass."

My mother, Lorraine, smoothed her designer silk scarf, casting a disgusted side-eye toward the small plastic bassinet where Milo lay sleeping.

"We are giving you a graceful exit, Sienna," she said, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy. "A single woman in your condition... raising a child with no father listed on the birth certificate... the Charleston country club circles are already gossiping. If Preston’s investors find out that a rogue, unstable shareholder is holding fourteen percent of the voting stock, the buyout deal falls through."

I slowly lifted my head from the pillow. My body was still exhausted from eight hours of labor, the epidural barely wearing off, but inside my chest, a cold, unshakeable fire had ignited.

"Preston's investors?" I asked softly, keeping my voice low so as not to startle my son. "You mean the shell company Preston set up in Delaware to siphon the waterfront development funds?"

My father’s face flushed a violent, dark crimson. "Watch your mouth, Sienna! Preston is stabilizing this family’s legacy! You left two years ago because you couldn't handle the heat of corporate real estate. Now sign the paper."

He snatched a heavy montblanc pen from his inner jacket pocket and thrust it toward my hand.

I didn't reach for the pen. I didn't reach for the folder.

Instead, I looked past my father’s broad shoulders, toward the frosted glass door of the private recovery room.

A tall, broad-shouldered shadow had just stopped on the other side of the glass. The silhouette was unmistakable—imposing, sharp, and radiating a quiet, dangerous authority.

The heavy door glided open.

A man stepped into the room. He wore a charcoal-black bespoke suit with a dark tie, his dark hair brushed back, his piercing steel-blue eyes sweeping over the room until they landed squarely on me—and then moved down to the tiny bassinet beside my bed.

My mother gasped, taking an instinctive step backward.

Warren Halbrook froze, his hand remaining suspended in mid-air holding the pen. The color drained from his face so fast it was as if he had seen a ghost.

It was Alexander Vance.

At thirty-four, Alexander was the principal founder and majority owner of Vance Global Infrastructure—a multinational conglomerate worth over forty billion dollars. He owned half the commercial skyline in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Miami, and held the primary debt mortgages for nearly every major bank in South Carolina.

He was also the most ruthless, reclusive billionaire in the southern United States.

"Mr... Mr. Vance?" my father stammered, his arrogant posture instantly collapsing into an obsequious, groveling stance. He dropped the pen onto the blanket and adjusted his tie with trembling fingers. "What an... absolute honor, sir! What brings you to the maternity wing of Roper Hospital? If this is regarding the harbor expansion project—"

Alexander didn't look at my father. He didn't even acknowledge his existence.

He walked straight past Warren and Lorraine, his hand brushing gently against my forehead, his fingers sliding into my hair as he leaned down and pressed a soft, lingering kiss onto my lips.

"How are you feeling, sweetheart?" Alexander asked softly, his cold blue eyes instantly softening into pure warmth as he looked down at me.

"I'm tired," I whispered, smiling for the first time since my labor began. "But I'm okay."

Alexander turned slowly toward the bassinet. He reached down with a calloused, powerful hand, gently sliding his thumb into Milo’s tiny palm. The newborn instantly wrapped his fingers around his father's thumb, letting out a soft, contented sigh.

"He's perfect, Sienna," Alexander murmured, a rare, breathtaking smile breaking across his face.

My mother’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. Her pearl necklace rattled against her throat as she clutched her husband's arm.

"Sienna..." Lorraine squeaked, her voice trembling violently. "What... who... why is Mr. Vance kissing you?"

May you like

Alexander slowly straightened to his full height—six-foot-three of pure, unyielding power. He turned around, placing one hand in his pocket while the other rested protectively over my shoulder.

"I am kissing her," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying baritone that filled every inch of the room, "because she is my wife. And that boy in the crib is my son and sole heir."
