Chapter 4 - The Exposure of Salneri

The foyer remained frozen in sheer shock.
Judge Patricia Sterling closed her legal folder with a sharp SNAP. She turned her gaze slowly toward Don Salneri, her eyes filled with icy condemnation.
"Mr. Salneri," Judge Sterling said, her voice dripping with judicial authority. "You swore under oath in my courtroom that this child was bedridden, neglected, and subjected to unsafe living conditions by her father."
Salneri’s face turned from pale to a deep, embarrassed purple. "Your Honor! This... this is a trick! They must have used illegal experimental drugs or nerve blocks! She was crippled ten days ago!"
"How dare you," Gabriel’s voice echoed across the foyer.
Gabriel stood up slowly, still holding Lily securely against his chest. His eyes locked onto Salneri with a fury so intense that Salneri’s legal team instinctively stepped back.
"You didn't care about Lily’s legs, Salneri," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "You wanted the fifty-million-dollar trust fund left to her by her mother. You paid Dr. Vance to keep her in heavy metal braces to slow down her recovery, so you could claim she was permanently incapacitated and name yourself her financial guardian."
Salneri sputtered. "That’s a lie! You have no proof!"
At that moment, the grand front doors opened once more.
Marco walked in, holding a leather folder, accompanied by two federal agents in dark suits.
"Actually, we have all the proof, Salneri," Marco said, handing the folder to Judge Sterling. "Ten minutes ago, federal agents raided Dr. Vance’s private office. We recovered bank transfer records showing Don Salneri transferred six hundred thousand dollars to Vance’s offshore account over the last six months to intentionally falsify Lily’s medical diagnosis."
Judge Sterling reviewed the documents, her face darkening with disgust.
"Don Salneri," Judge Sterling declared, turning to the federal agents. "I am immediately dismissing all custody petitions with prejudice. Furthermore, I am issuing an emergency warrant for your arrest on charges of judicial fraud, bribery, and conspiracy to endanger a minor."
The two federal agents stepped forward, grabbing Salneri’s arms and forcing them behind his back, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"You can't do this to me!" Salneri screamed, struggling against the agents as he was dragged toward the front doors. "Gabriel! You’re a monster! You’ll pay for this!"
"Take him away," Gabriel commanded without even looking at him.
As the police cars drove away down the long driveway, sirens fading into the distance, a profound, peaceful quiet settled over the estate.
Judge Sterling turned to Gabriel, offering a warm, respectful smile. "Mr. Moretti, your daughter is thriving. This house is not only safe—it is filled with extraordinary care. All custody cases against you are officially closed."
"Thank you, Your Honor," Gabriel said softly.
After the judge and lawyers left, the grand foyer was empty, save for Gabriel, Lily, and Emma, who was standing quietly near the sunroom door, holding her polishing rag, preparing to slip back into the shadows of her maid duties.
Gabriel turned toward her.
"Emma," Gabriel called out.
Emma stopped, turning around. "Yes, Mr. Moretti? Should I prepare lunch for the girls?"
Gabriel walked over to her. Still holding Lily in one arm, he reached out with his free hand and gently took the polishing rag from Emma’s hands, setting it on a side table.
"You are done cleaning this house, Emma," Gabriel said, his voice trembling slightly with emotion.
Emma’s eyes widened with sudden worry. "Mr. Moretti... am I being let go?"
Gabriel looked into her warm brown eyes, his heart beating with a feeling he hadn't experienced in years—a feeling of pure hope.
"No, Emma," Gabriel whispered. "You saved my daughter’s life. You brought light back into this dark house. I am promoting you. From this moment on, you are the Head of Child Development and Household Director for the Moretti family. You will have your own suite, your own staff, and whatever salary you name."

Emma stared at him, tears welling in her eyes. "Mr. Moretti... I didn't do it for money or a title. I did it because Lily is a sweet, brilliant little girl who just needed someone to believe in her."
"I know," Gabriel said softly, reaching out to gently touch her hand. "And that is exactly why this family needs you."
