Chapter 3 - The Four Steps

Ten days passed like a tightening spring.

Outside the estate walls, Don Salneri’s legal machine was moving relentlessly. Injunctions were filed, media leaks were orchestrated, and rumors were spread that Gabriel Moretti was an unfit, dangerous father who kept his disabled child hidden away from proper medical treatment.

Inside the mansion, however, a quiet miracle was unfolding in secret.

Every afternoon, while Sophia took her nap, Emma took Lily into the sunny sunroom at the back of the house. She had removed the heavy, slippery oriental rugs and laid down soft, high-traction foam mats.

Gabriel watched every session from his study monitors—and often, behind the cracked wooden door of the sunroom itself.

Emma didn't use clinical tools. She used love, play, and clever design.

She placed colorful wooden blocks on low tables, encouraging Lily to pull herself up. She played cheerful piano music on a portable radio, swaying her hips and encouraging Lily to balance on her left leg while lifting her right foot to the beat.

Whenever Lily lost her balance and fell onto the soft mats, Emma didn't gasp or rush to pick her up. She would roll onto her own back, kick her feet in the air, and laugh, turning a fall into a game.

Lily stopped crying when she fell. She learned to laugh, push herself back up, and try again.

On the twelfth afternoon, the sky outside was clear and brilliant.

Gabriel was standing in his study when his phone rang. It was Marco.

"Boss," Marco said, his tone urgent. "Don Salneri, his lead attorney, and the court-appointed custody evaluator, Judge Patricia Sterling, have just arrived at the front gate. They have a judicial order for an unannounced wellness inspection. They are entering the driveway right now."

Gabriel’s chest tightened. "Assemble the legal team in the main parlor. I'm coming down."

Two minutes later, the front doors of the Moretti estate were thrown open.

Don Salneri walked into the foyer like a conquering king. He was a wealthy, dark-suited man in his late sixties, with silver hair, cold grey eyes, and a cruel, triumphant smile. Beside him walked Judge Patricia Sterling—a stern, sharp-featured woman carrying a thick legal folder—and three corporate attorneys.

"Gabriel!" Salneri called out loudly, his voice echoing through the marble hall. "We are here to check on my grandniece's well-being! We have reports that you have dismissed her certified medical team and are neglecting her therapeutic needs!"

Gabriel stood at the center of the foyer, his arms crossed over his chest, surrounded by his own security guards.

"You are trespassing in my home, Salneri," Gabriel said, his voice dark and deadly.

"This is a court-ordered evaluation, Mr. Moretti," Judge Sterling interjected firmly, holding up an official document. "I am required to inspect the child’s living conditions and observe her physical mobility. If she is unable to demonstrate basic developmental support, I will issue an emergency temporary custody transfer to Mr. Salneri today."

Salneri’s eyes flared with greedy delight. "Where is the girl, Gabriel? Or are you hiding her in a dark room because you’re ashamed of her condition?"

Before Gabriel could answer, the double doors of the sunroom slowly swung open.

Emma walked out first. She was wearing her clean maid's apron, her hair tied back, her expression completely serene.

Beside her, holding Emma’s right pinky finger with her tiny hand, was Lily.

The entire foyer fell into an instant, dead silence.

Lily wore a simple yellow floral dress. Her right leg had no metal braces. No leather straps. No heavy shoes. She stood on the marble floor on her own two feet, her small toes gripping the stone.

Salneri sneered. "A cute display, Gabriel! But standing while holding a servant’s hand proves nothing! The medical reports state she cannot bear weight independently!"

Emma looked down at Lily. She gently let go of the child's small pinky finger.

Emma took three steps backward, kneeling down on the cold marble floor across from Lily.

"Lily," Emma said softly, her voice filled with a warmth so radiant it seemed to light up the dark marble hall. "Come show your daddy your new dance."

Salneri scoffed. "This is absurd—"

"Quiet!" Judge Sterling snapped, leaning forward, her eyes wide.

In the middle of the grand foyer, two-year-old Lily looked at Emma. Then she turned her head and looked at her father, Gabriel, who was standing ten feet away, holding his breath, his whole body frozen in terror and hope.

Lily took a deep, small breath.

She lifted her weak right foot. Her knee wobbled slightly, but she planted her foot firmly on the marble.

One step.

Judge Sterling gasped.

Lily shifted her weight, bringing her left foot forward with confidence.

Two steps.

Salneri’s smile completely vanished, replaced by a look of stunned, horrific disbelief.

Lily kept her eyes on Gabriel. Her cheeks flushed with a bright, healthy pink. She lifted her right leg again, balancing effortlessly.

Three steps.

Four steps.

Without holding onto a walker, without metal braces, without crying, Lily walked four solid, independent steps straight into her father’s waiting arms.

Gabriel dropped to his knees on the marble floor, catching his daughter in his broad arms, pulling her tiny body against his chest, burying his face in her chestnut hair as hot, uncontrollable tears streamed down his face.

"Daddy!" Lily giggled loudly, wrapping her small arms around his neck. "Look! I walked to you!"

"I saw, baby," Gabriel sobbed softly, kissing her forehead over and over again. "I saw you. You were perfect."
