Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Hallway

By Wednesday morning, the quiet atmosphere of the Moretti estate was charged with an undercurrent of tension.

At 9:00 AM, a sleek grey sedan pulled into the driveway. Out stepped Dr. Leonard Vance—the lead pediatric physical therapist hired by Gabriel’s legal team—accompanied by two assistant nurses carrying heavy leather cases containing steel leg braces and diagnostic charts.

Gabriel stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, watching them enter the foyer. Emma was quietly polishing the brass handrails near the base of the stairs, her dark blonde hair pinned up neatly, wearing her simple grey maid’s uniform.

"Ah, Mr. Moretti," Dr. Vance called out, his voice loud, clinical, and echoing off the high ceilings. "We are here for Lily’s weekly intensive leg-extension session. The court-appointed child welfare inspector will be joining us at noon, so we must demonstrate aggressive physical progress."

Inside the adjacent playroom, two-year-old Lily heard Dr. Vance’s voice.

Immediately, a soft, heartbreaking whimper came from behind the playroom door. Lily scrambled toward the back corner of her playpen, clutching her stuffed rabbit, her small body trembling with familiar terror.

Emma stopped polishing. She set her rag down and turned to look at Dr. Vance.

"Dr. Vance," Emma said softly, her tone polite but completely firm. "Lily is tired this morning. She had a difficult night with her leg cramping. Pushing her into the steel braces today will only cause her pain."

Dr. Vance froze, turning to look at Emma with a mix of shock and utter disdain. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, looking her up and down as if inspecting a smudge on his shoe.

"I beg your pardon?" Dr. Vance sneered. "You are a domestic maid. You are hired to dust furniture and mop floors. You do not hold a medical degree, nor do you have any authority to comment on a patient's clinical care regimen."

"I hold a degree in early childhood development, Dr. Vance," Emma replied calmly, not backing down an inch. "And I know that when a child’s muscles are inflamed from night spasms, forced mechanical extension causes micro-tears in the muscle tissue. It builds trauma, not strength."

"Enough!" Dr. Vance barked, turning toward Gabriel on the staircase. "Mr. Moretti, are you going to allow your household staff to question certified medical professionals? If this child does not show mobility compliance, the court inspectors will rule your home environment negligent!"

Gabriel descended the stairs slowly. His heavy leather shoes made no sound on the marble steps, but his presence seemed to swallow all the air in the foyer.

He walked past Dr. Vance without giving the doctor a single glance. Instead, he stopped directly in front of Emma.

The foyer went completely silent. Dr. Vance smiled smugly, expecting Gabriel to fire the maid on the spot.

Gabriel looked into Emma’s warm brown eyes. "What do you propose, Emma?"

Dr. Vance’s jaw dropped in absolute shock. "Mr. Moretti! She is a servant!"

"Shut your mouth, Vance," Gabriel said, his voice so quiet and terrifyingly sharp that the doctor instantly took a step back, his face draining of color.

Gabriel kept his eyes on Emma. "Tell me."

"She needs time without the metal frames," Emma said gently, looking up at Gabriel without fear. "She needs to build core strength through natural movement, not fear. Give me two weeks, Mr. Moretti. No heavy braces. No shouting doctors. Just let her move at her own pace."

Gabriel looked toward the open door of the playroom. He could see Lily peeking out from behind a wooden chair, her large hazel eyes fixed on Emma with absolute trust.

"You have two weeks," Gabriel declared.

He turned to Dr. Vance and his nurses. "Pack your bags and get out of my house. Your services are terminated."

"You... you can't do this!" Dr. Vance stuttered, clutching his briefcase. "Don Salneri’s legal team will use this against you in court! They will claim you are denying the child medical care!"

Gabriel leaned in close to Vance’s ear. "If I see you near my gates again, Vance, I won't just fire you. I will buy your clinic, dismantle it, and ensure you never practice medicine in this state again. Leave."

Dr. Vance and his team scrambled out the front door like frightened rats, slamming the heavy oak doors behind them.

Emma let out a soft breath, turning to Gabriel. "Thank you, Mr. Moretti."

"Don't thank me yet, Emma," Gabriel said, his dark eyes searching her face. "Don Salneri is coming for my family. If Lily cannot walk by the time the custody judge arrives, they will take her from this house. You just put my daughter’s future in your hands."

"I know," Emma replied, her chin lifting slightly. "And I won't let her fall."
