Chapter 5 - The Midnight Reckoning

The wind off Lake Michigan was brutal, carrying shards of ice that whipped against the rusted corrugated metal of the abandoned Navy Pier warehouse.
Inside, the space was cavernous, lit only by a few hanging industrial floodlights that cast long, monstrous shadows across the floor. In the center of the room, tied to a heavy wooden chair, was Julian Price. He was battered, his head hanging low, his chest rising and falling in shallow, painful gasps.
Leo Moretti, a smug, heavy-set man in an expensive fur-collared coat, stood over him, twirling a silver revolver. A dozen heavily armed mercenaries stood in the shadows behind him, their weapons trained on the main entrance.
At exactly 12:00 midnight, the heavy metal doors creaked open.
A single silhouette walked through the snow flurries into the light.
Dominic Vale walked alone. He had his hands raised slightly away from his sides, showing he carried no rifle. His long overcoat swept against his boots.
"Look at that," Leo Moretti mocked, his voice echoing in the rafters. "The great Dominic Vale, crawling into the slaughterhouse. Where's your army, Dom? Where's that pretty little secret daughter of yours?"
Dominic stopped twenty feet away. His face was entirely devoid of fear. It was the face of a grim reaper.
"Let Julian go, Leo. This is between you and me," Dominic said, his voice flat and deadly.
"You don't dictate terms anymore!" Leo snarled, stepping forward and slamming the butt of his gun into Julian's jaw. Julian groaned, spitting blood, but forced his eyes open.
"Dom... get out of here... it's a set-up..." Julian croaked.
"Quiet, dead man," Leo hissed. He looked back at Dominic. "Give me the encrypted drive with the offshore routing codes, and tell me where the girl is. Do it now, or I watch my men take you apart piece by piece."
Dominic slowly reached into his inner pocket. He pulled out a small, metallic silver drive. He held it up between his fingers.
"You want my empire, Leo? You want the money?" Dominic asked softly. "Take it. It never brought me anything but blood anyway."
Leo’s eyes gleamed with greed. He gestured to one of his men. "Go get it."
The mercenary stepped forward, reaching out for the drive.
But Dominic didn't hand it over. Instead, he pressed a tiny hidden button on the side of the device.
A high-pitched, electronic beep emitted from the drive.
Suddenly, the floodlights went dead. Total darkness enveloped the warehouse.
"What the hell?! Shoot him! Shoot him!" Leo screamed.
Instantly, the glass skylights above shattered into a million pieces. Flashbang grenades dropped from the ceiling, exploding in blinding flashes of white light and deafening booms.
Dominic’s voice echoed through the chaos: "Now!"
From the darkness, the roar of automatic weapons opened up—but it wasn't the Morettis firing. Aaron Mercer and twenty of Dominic’s most elite, loyal operators, equipped with night-vision goggles, poured out from the hidden shipping containers lining the warehouse walls.
Dominic ducked low, drawing two concealed pistols from his waistband. He moved like a shadow through the smoke, his muzzle flashes illuminating the grim finality in his eyes. Every shot he fired found its mark. The mercenaries who had betrayed the organization fell one by one.
Leo Moretti fired wildly into the dark, panicked and desperate. "Vale! Where are you?!"
A heavy boot struck Leo’s chest, throwing him backward onto the concrete floor. He scrambled to his feet, but found the cold barrel of Dominic’s pistol pressed directly between his eyes.
The emergency backup lights flickered on, casting a dim, red glow over the blood-stained warehouse. The Moretti mercenaries were all disarmed or dead. Aaron was already cutting Julian free from the chair.
Leo looked up at Dominic, his face covered in sweat, his chest heaving with terror. "Dom... please... we can share the city... we can make a deal..."
Dominic looked down at him with utter disdain. "You threatened my daughter, Leo. In my world, that means there is no deal. There is no negotiation. There is only an ending."
"Please—"
Dominic didn't let him finish. A single, decisive shot echoed through the warehouse, and Leo Moretti fell silent forever.
Dominic slowly lowered his weapon. He turned to Aaron, who was supporting a weak but breathing Julian.

"Is it done?" Aaron asked.
"It's done," Dominic said, looking out at the frozen lake. "The feds want Dominic Vale the crime boss. Let them have the ashes of this empire. I'm going home."
