Chapter 2 - The Shattered Secret

By 6:00 a.m., the hospital was under an invisible siege. Dominic’s men guarded every exit, while the local police—well-aware of who Dominic Vale was—hovered outside the perimeter, unwilling to spark a gang war inside a medical facility.

Inside Lily’s room, the tension was suffocating. Lily had woken up briefly, groggy from the painkillers, before drifting back to sleep. Claire had stayed by her side, terrified to leave the room, knowing Dominic was somewhere in the building.

A sharp knock on the door made Claire jump.

It wasn't Dominic. It was Dr. Hart, holding a sealed cream-colored envelope. The doctor’s face was a mask of utter confusion and professional anxiety.

"Claire," Dr. Hart said, closing the door securely behind her. "We ran the standard post-transfusion panel and genetic compatibility screening on Lily. Because of the rarity of the blood and the emergency nature of the direct draw, the lab processed a rapid DNA profile to ensure there was no adverse cellular rejection."

Claire felt the blood drain from her face. "And?"

Dr. Hart handed her the envelope. "The lab technician thought it was an error. She ran it three times. The genetic markers... Claire, the donor’s blood doesn't just match Lily's type. The familial alleles are an exact half-match."

Claire’s hands shook so violently she could barely open the paper. But she didn't need to read the numbers. She already knew what they said.

"He's her father," Dr. Hart whispered. "Dominic Vale is Lily's father."

"He can't find out," Claire gasped, grabbing the doctor's arm. "Elena, please. You don't understand who he is. If he finds out, he will take her into a world of bullets, hits, and assassinations. She will never be safe!"

"Find out what?"

The door swung open. Dominic stood in the entryway. He had put his overcoat back on, making him look even larger, more imposing. Aaron stood behind him, his hand subtly resting inside his jacket where his firearm was concealed.

Claire quickly hid the paper behind her back, but Dominic’s sharp eyes caught the movement instantly.

"Out," Dominic told Dr. Hart. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried an absolute authority that made the room feel ten degrees colder.

Dr. Hart looked at Claire, hesitated, and then quietly exited, closing the door behind her.

Dominic walked into the room, his boots making no sound on the linoleum floor. He stopped at the foot of Lily’s bed, his gaze dropping to the sleeping girl. He looked at her nose, the shape of her jaw, and then noticed the tiny, crescent-shaped scar beneath her left cheekbone.

Dominic’s breath caught. He slowly reached into his own collar, pulling out a small silver medallion he always wore beneath his shirt. Engraved on it was the crest of his mother's family—a family mark he had carried since childhood. But more than that, he looked down at his own left hand, where a faint, identical crescent scar sat near his thumb, a remnant of an old childhood accident.

"Thirteen years old," Dominic said, his voice dangerously quiet. "She was born in October, wasn't she?"

Claire swallowed hard, tears blurring her vision. "Dominic, please—"

"Give me the paper, Claire."

"No."

Dominic stepped around the bed, reaching out and firmly but gently taking the paper from her trembling fingers. Claire didn't have the strength to fight him.

He unfolded the document. His eyes scanned the medical jargon, the percentages, the undeniable conclusion printed at the bottom: 99.99% Probability of Paternity.

For the first time in eleven years, Aaron Mercer saw his boss completely freeze. The legendary composure of Dominic Vale cracked. The paper shook slightly in his hand.

"They told me I was sterile," Dominic whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing emotion. "The doctors... my father... they told me the infection ruined everything. They told me I would leave nothing behind but an empty house and a bloody name."

"Your father lied to you, Dominic," Claire cried out, her voice breaking. "His men drove me out of Chicago while you were in that coma! They told me if I ever came back, they would bury me in the river. I found out I was pregnant a month later. I wanted to protect her! Look at your life, Dominic! Look at last night! People are trying to kill you! How could I bring a little girl into that?"

Dominic stared at the DNA test, then at Lily. A wave of intense, blinding fury crossed his features—fury at his deceased father, fury at the lies he had lived by, and a sudden, terrifyingly fierce wave of protectiveness.

"She is a Vale," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a dark, resonant rumble that shook Claire to her core. "My daughter. And nobody—not my enemies, not the past—will ever touch her again."

"Dominic, no!" Claire begged, grabbing his lapels. "Don't do this!"

Suddenly, the windows of the fourth-floor corridor shattered.

The loud RAT-TAT-TAT of automatic gunfire echoed through the hallway. Screams erupted from the nursing station. Aaron immediately drew his weapon, pushing Dominic and Claire down toward the floor as glass showered the room.

The war had arrived at the hospital door.
