Chapter 4 - The Empire Crumbles

Forty-eight hours later, the underworld of Chicago was burning.
Dominic had moved Claire and Lily to an abandoned, heavily fortified underground printing press he had purchased under a shell company a decade ago—a location even Aaron hadn't known about until now. Dr. Hart had been brought along at gunpoint to ensure Lily’s medical care, though the doctor had quickly realized she wasn't a hostage, but a highly valued guest.
Lily was resting comfortably on a makeshift medical cot, her fever breaking. Claire sat beside her, watching the television monitor mounted on the concrete wall.
"...Federal authorities have seized over eighty million dollars in assets linked to the Vale Organization," the news anchor reported. "...Dominic Vale remains at large, wanted for multiple counts of racketeering. Sources say the rival Moretti crime family has assumed control of the downtown shipping ports, sparking fears of an unprecedented turf war..."
"He's losing everything," Claire whispered, turning around as Dominic entered the room.
He looked exhausted. His shirt was stained with grease and dried blood, his jaw covered in dark stubble. Yet, his posture remained unbroken.
"Let them take the buildings," Dominic said coldly, walking over to Lily's bedside. He reached out, gently touching the girl's forehead to check her temperature. Lily opened her eyes, offering him a small, weak smile.
"Hi," Lily whispered.
"Hi, little bird," Dominic replied, his voice softening instantly. "How is the pain?"
"Better. The doctor gave me medicine." Lily looked at him intently. "My mom told me who you are. She told me you gave me your blood. And she told me... you're my dad."
Dominic’s hand paused on her forehead. He looked at Claire, who looked away, tears in her eyes. Dominic slowly knelt down beside the low cot, bringing himself eye-level with the thirteen-year-old girl.
"I am," Dominic said softly. "I didn't know about you, Lily. If I had, I would have burned this entire city to the ground before I let anyone force your mother away. I spent my whole life building an empire because I thought I had nothing else. But I was wrong. You are the only thing that matters."
Lily reached out her small hand, placing her fingers over the crescent scar on Dominic's hand, comparing it to her own. "Are the bad men outside trying to hurt us because of you?"
Dominic squeezed her hand gently. "They are trying. But I promise you, they will fail."
He stood up, his expression turning to stone as Aaron entered the room, looking grim.
"Dominic. Leo Moretti just called the secure line. He has Julian."
Dominic’s jaw clenched. "Julian is still alive?"
"Barely. They pulled him from the ICU recovery unit after we left. Leo wants a trade. He wants you to surrender yourself, your encrypted financial keys, and the location of your daughter at the Navy Pier warehouse tonight at midnight. If you don't show, he sends Julian back to us in pieces—and then he hunts down Claire and Lily."
Claire gasped, covering her mouth. "Dominic, it's a trap. He'll kill you all."
"I know," Dominic said quietly. He walked over to the weapon crates lined against the wall, picking up an M4 automatic rifle, checking the chamber with practiced efficiency. "Aaron, assemble what's left of the loyal vanguard. We have six hours."
May you like
"Dominic, we're outnumbered three to one," Aaron warned. "The police are looking for us, the feds are looking for us, and the Morettis have the entire South Side locked down."
"Then we change the rules of the game," Dominic said, looking back at Claire and Lily. "I survived the streets, I survived the fever, and I survived a decade of betrayals. Leo Moretti thinks he's fighting a man who wants to protect his kingdom. He doesn't realize he's fighting a father who has everything to lose."
