Chapter 5 - THE SIEGE OF RED HOOK

Three months later.

The icy grip of winter had finally broken, giving way to the dark, rainy nights of early spring.

The war between the Romano family and the combined forces of the Falcone and Casserly cartels had reached its bloody, inevitable climax. For twelve weeks, the streets of New York had been a battleground of hit-and-run shootings, seized harbor terminals, and burnt-out warehouses.

At 11:00 PM, inside the command center of the Red Hook Shipping Terminal, the air was heavy with the smell of diesel oil, wet asphalt, and gunpowder.

Outside the corrugated steel warehouse, fifty heavily armed Romano soldiers were positioned behind shipping containers, their automatic rifles pointed toward the main gate.

Inside the central office, Lily sat beside Ethan at a steel desk.

She wore a dark tactical sweater and jeans, her hair tied back in a neat braid. Over the last three months, she had refused to stay hidden in the Long Island mansion while Alessandro fought his war. She had moved with him, managing the emergency medical supplies and logistics for his injured men, becoming an indispensable pillar of strength for the entire Romano family.

Ethan sat beside her, wearing custom light-weight leg braces that allowed him to walk with a wooden cane. He was busy helping Lily organize medical bandages into crates.

"They're coming tonight, aren't they, Lily?" Ethan asked quietly, his small brown eyes looking toward the heavy steel doors.

Lily reached out, gently smoothing his dark curls. "Your father is outside, Ethan. Nothing gets through him."

BOOM!

A massive explosion rocked the foundation of the warehouse, sending light fixtures crashing down from the high steel rafters.

The high-pitched screech of tearing metal tore through the night as a heavy armored truck crashed through the main security gate of the terminal, followed by three black vans overflowing with Falcone’s mercenary forces.

"FIRE!" Marco’s voice roared over the tactical radio chatter.

Intense, deafening gunfire erupted across the harbor terminal. Tracers lit up the rain-soaked night in bright flashes of red and orange, bullets shattering glass and tearing through corrugated steel panels.

Inside the warehouse office, Lily instantly pushed Ethan under the heavy steel desk, covering his body with her broad frame.

"Stay down, sweetheart," she whispered, her hands steady despite the chaos.

The office doors were suddenly kicked open.

Don Casserly stepped inside, holding a submachine gun, his face smeared with grease and rain. Behind him stood three heavy hitmen.

"Well, well," Casserly sneered, his yellowed teeth showing in a wicked grin as he spotted Lily and the boy under the desk. "The gardener and the little miracle kid. Falcone is going to pay me a million dollars to bring your heads back to Brooklyn."

He raised his weapon.

"Drop it, Casserly," a low, terrifying voice purred from the shadows behind the door.

Casserly didn't even have time to turn his head.

Alessandro stepped out from the darkness of the hallway. He looked like a god of war—his dark three-piece suit torn and bloodied, his white shirt stained crimson, holding a heavy tactical shotgun in his bare hands.

BOOM!

The shotgun blast hit Casserly in the chest, blasting his body ten feet backward out of the office doorway.

Before the three hitmen could react, Alessandro fired twice more, the heavy buckshot tearing through their tactical vests, dropping them instantly onto the wet concrete floor.

Alessandro racked the shotgun slide, ejecting a glowing red shell casing that bounced loudly against the metal floor. He stepped into the office, his heavy boots leaving bloody footprints behind him.

"Alessandro!" Lily cried out, sliding out from under the desk and rushing toward him.

Alessandro dropped the shotgun, catching her in a fierce, crushing hug. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her sweet, warm scent of chamomile and fresh rain, feeling his heart hammer wildly against his ribs.

"Are you hit? Is Ethan safe?" Alessandro rasped out, his voice shaking with raw, desperate fear.

"We’re okay! We’re fine!" Lily reassured him, her hands holding his blood-stained face, her hazel eyes searching his for injuries. "Is it over?"

Alessandro looked out through the shattered window of the office.

Outside, the gunfire had died down. The remaining Falcone mercenaries were throwing their weapons onto the wet pavement, raising their hands as Marco’s tactical squads surrounded them. On the main dock, Don Carmine Falcone was being dragged out of his limousine in steel handcuffs, his reign over Brooklyn completely shattered.

Alessandro turned back to look at Lily, a rare, breathtaking smile breaking across his blood-smeared face.

"It’s over, my sweet gardener," Alessandro whispered, taking her soft hand and pressing a deep, passionate kiss against her knuckles. "The city is ours."
