Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AMBUSH

The clock in the central tower of the Romano Mansion struck 2:00 AM.
Outside, the snowstorm had escalated into a full-blown blizzard, blinding the security cameras positioned along the estate's three-mile perimeter fence. Heavy snow piled up against the windows of the small, stone cottage situated near the south edge of the property—the quarters assigned to the estate’s gardening staff.
Lily Brooks sat on her narrow twin bed, wrapped in a faded wool blanket, holding a steaming mug of tea in her lap.
She couldn't sleep. Her mind kept replaying the feeling she had felt that morning—that tiny, almost imperceptible twitch beneath her thumbs when she had pressed against the base of Ethan’s right heel. It hadn't been a muscle spasm. It had been an active, voluntary response to warmth.
Nerve regeneration, she thought, her hazel eyes staring out at the white vortex outside her window. The injury isn't complete. It’s sleeping.
Suddenly, the small lamp on her bedside table flickered twice and died.
The hum of the cottage’s radiator sputtered to a halt. The entire estate had plunged into absolute darkness as the main power grid went dead.
Lily set her tea mug down, her instincts instantly on high alert. Growing up on a farm in upstate New York had taught her the silence of nature, but this silence wasn't natural. There was no sound of the emergency generators kicking in—generators that Alessandro’s chief of security had boasted could power a small city.
Click.
The faint sound came from the kitchen door downstairs. It wasn't the sound of a key. It was the soft, metallic snap of a crowbar popping a window latch.
Lily slid out of bed without making a sound. She was barefoot, her heavy corduroy trousers soft against the wooden floorboards. She reached into her canvas gardening bag resting by the door, her fingers wrapping around a heavy, high-carbon steel pruning shears—twelve inches of razor-sharp iron designed for cutting through oak branches.
She crept to the top of the dark staircase, holding her breath.
In the faint, silver moonlight filtering through the snow-covered window, she saw three shadows moving up the wooden stairs. They wore dark tactical masks, heavy winter jackets, and held silenced 9mm pistols in their gloved hands.
"The boss said make it look like a break-in," one of the men whispered, his voice thick with a guttural Queens accent. "Shoot the girl, take the jewelry in her dresser, and torch the cottage. The snow will cover the tracks before the guards on the main road even wake up."
"What about the boss's order regarding the kid?" another man whispered back.
"Moretti wants the kid terrified," the first man replied with a cruel chuckle. "Once the gardener girl dies, Moretti will convince Alessandro that the Morello family did it to send a message. It’ll push Alessandro into a war he can't win."
Lily’s blood turned to liquid ice.
Dominic Moretti. The underboss wasn't just traitorous; he was setting up an assassination on the estate grounds to drag Alessandro into a bloody gang war that would leave Moretti in control of the waterfront.
The lead assassin reached the top landing, stepping toward her bedroom door.
Lily didn't scream. She didn't freeze.
She stepped out from behind the wooden linen closet and swung the heavy steel pruning shears with all the strength in her shoulders.
CRACK!
The heavy iron handles smashed directly into the first assassin's throat. The man let out a wet, strangled gasp, dropping his silenced pistol as he crashed backward down the stairs, taking the second intruder with him in a tangle of limbs and heavy boots.
"What the hell?!" the third man yelled, raising his suppressed handgun toward the top of the stairs.
Lily didn't wait. She grabbed a heavy, ninety-pound terra-cotta plant pot filled with wet soil that sat on the window sill and shoved it over the balcony rail.
THUD!
The massive ceramic pot shattered directly onto the third man’s head, knocking him unconscious onto the hard hardwood floor below.
"You bitch!" the second man roared, scrambling up the stairs, blood dripping from his broken nose. He lunged forward, grabbing Lily by her hair and slamming her broad frame back against the hallway wall.
Lily gasped in pain as her head hit the plaster, but her hands worked on pure instinct. She grabbed the man’s throat with her left hand, digging her calloused fingers into his windpipe, while her right knee drove violently upward into his groin.
The man groaned, doubling over. Lily grabbed his tactical vest, flipped him over her heavy hip, and sent him crashing through the thin wooden railing, falling twelve feet into the living room below.
Breathing heavily, her nose bleeding from the impact against the wall, Lily scrambled toward the stairs to grab the fallen pistol.
Before her hand could touch the cold steel, the front door of the cottage was kicked completely off its brass hinges.
BOOM!
A blinding white tactical light flooded the room, followed by the terrifying, deafening roar of a heavy shotgun blast that shattered the wall above her head.
"DON'T MOVE!" a voice thundered through the dark.
Four heavy security team members in full tactical armor poured into the ruined cottage, their laser sights painting red dots across the room. Behind them, stepping through the destroyed doorway in a floor-length dark cashmere coat, was Alessandro Romano.
He looked like a demon rising from the underworld. His dark hair was covered in snow, his silver eyes flashing with a murderous, unholy rage that made the temperature in the room plunge to absolute zero. In his right hand, he held a massive silver revolver, its barrel still smoking.
Alessandro looked at the three unconscious, bleeding assassins on the floor, then raised his gaze to the top of the stairs.
Lily stood there, her clothes torn, her face smeared with blood and dark soil, clutching her heavy pruning shears like a warrior queen guarding her throne.
Alessandro slowly lowered his weapon. His grey eyes swept over her plush, blood-splattered figure, taking in her bruised cheek, her wild hair, and the fierce, absolute defiance burning in her hazel eyes.
For the first time in ten years, the terrifying mob king of New York felt his heart slam violently against his ribs.
He strode up the broken staircase in three heavy steps, stopping directly in front of her. Without saying a word, he reached out his gloved hand, gently wiping a smudge of blood from her cheek with his thumb.
"Did they touch you?" Alessandro whispered, his voice vibrating with a dark, lethal tenderness that made Lily’s knees go soft.
"I... I handled them, Mr. Romano," Lily panted, trying to wipe her nose with her sleeve. "They were sent by—"
"I know who sent them," Alessandro interrupted smoothly.
He took the heavy pruning shears from her hand, tossed them onto the floor, and then wrapped his massive, warm arm around her waist. Before Lily could comprehend what was happening, Alessandro lifted her heavy frame effortlessly into his broad chest, pulling her against his heart as if she weighed no more than a feather.
"Mr. Romano! What are you doing?" Lily gasped, her face flushing bright red as her arms instinctively wrapped around his broad neck.
"You are not staying in this cottage another second," Alessandro declared, turning around and carrying her down the ruined stairs, past his awe-struck security team. "From this night on, you sleep in the main house. Next to my room."

He paused at the front door, looking down at Marco.
"Put Moretti in the cellar," Alessandro ordered flatly. "And tell the council that Don Alessandro Romano has found his queen."
