Chapter 3 - THE QUEEN IN CORDUROY

The grand master suite on the third floor of the Romano Mansion looked like a fortress within a castle.
The walls were paneled in dark, rich mahogany, lined with thousands of leather-bound books, and shielded by four-inch-thick bulletproof glass windows that looked out over the stormy Atlantic. A massive wood-burning fireplace crackled near the corner, casting warm, golden light across a velvet-covered sofa and a king-sized canopy bed.
Lily sat on the edge of the velvet sofa, wrapped in a plush white silk robe that felt impossibly soft against her bruised skin.
A silver tray sat on the marble table in front of her, holding hot broth, fresh bread, and an array of expensive medical ointments.
Alessandro stood by the grand desk, his jacket removed, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing arms laced with dark muscle and old bullet scars. He was meticulously cleaning a pair of silver medical tweezers over a small candle flame.
"Hold still," Alessandro said softly, kneeling down on the Persian rug directly between her knees.
Lily’s heart pounded wildly against her ribs. The sheer physical presence of this man—a man who commanded thousands of soldiers across the city—kneeling at her feet like a humble servant was overwhelmingly intense. His dark, masculine scent of expensive sandalwood, gunpowder, and rain filled her senses.
"I can do that myself, Mr. Romano," Lily whispered, her hands twitching on her lap. "It's just a small glass splinter from the broken plant pot."
"You fought three armed hitmen with a pair of garden shears, Lily," Alessandro said gently, using the tweezers to expertly extract a tiny shard of glass from the soft palm of her left hand. His large, calloused fingers held her hand with astonishing delicate care. "Let me take care of you for five minutes."
He dabbed a cooling, scented salve over the cut, then brought her palm to his lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her raw skin.
Lily gasped, a shiver running down her spine that had nothing to do with the cold outside.
"Why are you doing this?" Lily asked, her voice trembling slightly as she looked down into his intense grey eyes. "I’m just a gardener you hired three weeks ago. I'm not a high-society woman, Mr. Romano. I don't wear silk gowns. I don't know how to navigate your world."
Alessandro stood up slowly, his tall frame looming over her. He didn't step back. He leaned down, resting his palms on the sofa on either side of her hips, trapping her in a web of pure, magnetic focus.
"My wife was a high-society woman, Lily," Alessandro murmured, his voice dropping into a dark, mesmerizing baritone. "She wore five-thousand-dollar dresses and cared more about the social rankings in the Hamptons than whether our son smiled. When the bomb went off... she died screaming because she couldn't understand why the world wasn't obeying her status."
He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the full curve of Lily’s lower lip.
"You sat in the freezing mud," Alessandro continued, his eyes burning with an intense, raw emotion. "You spoke to my broken boy as if he were a king. You put your hands in cold water to warm his feet. And tonight, you bled to protect a home that wasn't even yours."
He leaned in closer until his warm breath brushed against her temple.
"In my world, Lily... women like you are not 'just gardeners.' You are the only thing worth fighting a war for."
Before Lily could answer, a soft knock sounded at the heavy mahogany door.
Marco stepped inside, his expression dark and tense. He held a brass key in his hand and wore a leather tactical vest.
"Boss," Marco said quietly. "Moretti is awake down in the cellar. The commission members—Don Falcone and Don Casserly—have just arrived at the gates with six carloads of men. They heard about the commotion at the estate and are demanding an immediate audience under the five-family treaty."
Alessandro straightened up, his warm expression instantly transforming back into the cold, lethal steel of the mafia boss.
"Did they come to negotiate, Marco?" Alessandro asked, picking up his dark suit jacket from the chair and putting it on with smooth, effortless grace.
"They came to push Moretti’s claim, boss," Marco replied grimly. "Falcone is saying that if you can't control your own estate security, the commission should step in to manage the waterfront operations."
Alessandro adjusted his cuffs, his silver eyes flashing with a terrifying, absolute confidence.
"Tell Falcone and Casserly that the council meeting will take place in the grand dining hall in ten minutes," Alessandro ordered.
He turned back to look at Lily, who was standing up from the sofa, pulling her plush silk robe tight around her generous waist.
"Alessandro..." Lily said, using his first name for the first time. "What are you going to do?"
Alessandro walked over to her, taking her face in his large, warm hands, pressing a firm, protective kiss onto her forehead.
"I am going to end a traitor, my sweet gardener," Alessandro whispered against her skin. "And then I am going to show New York who reigns over this house."

He turned to Marco.
"Bring Miss Brooks a dress from the east wing wardrobe," Alessandro commanded. "And tell Ethan his mother is coming down for dinner."
