Chapter 8 - Healing the Fracture

The remainder of Christmas dinner was quiet, solemn, but strangely peaceful. The phantom weight that had hung over our household for the past three years—ever since Jessica began her gradual, manipulative campaign to isolate Mark from the rest of the family—was finally gone.

Jessica packed her personal belongings upstairs under the quiet supervision of one of Viktor’s associates, her arrogance entirely replaced by a humbled, subdued silence. By midnight, she had departed for her sister’s temporary residence, adhering strictly to the preliminary terms of our agreement.

Mark sat across from me at the mahogany table, swirling a glass of sparkling cider. The festive candles flickered softly, casting warm amber light across the room.

"I'm sorry, Dad," Mark said softly, his voice breaking as he looked down at his plate. "I was blind. I let her take over because I was afraid of conflict. I thought if I gave in to her demands, she would finally be happy."

"Appeasing someone who wants absolute control never works, Mark," I said, offering him a warm, reassuring smile. "Appetite only grows with eating. But mistakes are how we learn. What matters now is what we do tomorrow."

"I want to fix things," Mark said, his eyes firming with newfound resolve. "With you, with the company, and most importantly, with Tommy and Lily. I want to be a father they can respect."

"And you will be," I replied, raising my glass toward him. "We all will."
