Chapter 7 - Signing Away the Crown

The scratch of the fountain pen against heavy parchment was the only sound in the vast dining room. Jessica’s hand shook so violently that she had to use her left hand to steady her right wrist as she signed her name across the dotted lines.
With every stroke of the pen, the oppressive atmosphere in the room seemed to lift just a fraction. The illusion of her control, so loudly proclaimed at the start of dinner, vanished into thin air, leaving behind the sobering reality of her defeat.
Viktor inspected the signature with practiced precision, checking the digital timestamp on his tablet to ensure the cryptographic seal matched. He nodded approvingly, slid the papers back into his leather folder, and stood at attention.
"The agreement is legally binding and registered with the court server," Viktor announced. "As of this moment, Mrs. Jessica Sterling has zero legal or financial standing regarding any Sterling assets."
Martha, Jessica’s mother, who had been lingering near the doorway with her coat half-on, sniffed loudly and muttered something about toxic environments before turning on her heel and marching out into the cold night air, followed closely by the rest of her relatives. Within three minutes, the uninvited guests were gone, leaving only the immediate family in the quiet, candlelit room.

I stood up from my chair, my joints aching slightly with age, but my posture tall and unyielding. I looked down at Mark, who was still kneeling on the marble floor, looking up at me with a mixture of shame and profound gratitude.
"Get up, son," I said gently. "Dinner is getting cold. Let us finish our meal."
