Chapter 2 - The Men in Dark Suits

The men advanced with the synchronized precision of military operatives, their leather shoes clicking sharply against the imported Italian marble of our foyer. At the lead was Viktor Vance, a senior partner from Vance, Sterling & Roth—our family's corporate legal and financial firm for over three decades.

Jessica’s mother, Martha, who had been grinning smugly just seconds prior, recoiled in her seat, her spoon hovering near a bowl of lobster bisque. "Who invited these people?" she hissed, her voice cutting through the heavy tension. "This is a private family gathering! Get out!"

Viktor didn't even glance at her. His gaze was fixed entirely on me. He stopped three paces from the head of the table, lifted his chin in a respectful nod, and opened his black leather folder.

"Good evening, Mr. Sterling," Viktor said, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely devoid of holiday cheer. "I apologize for the intrusion on Christmas night, but given the automated flags triggered on your corporate and personal accounts at precisely 6:15 PM, protocol dictated our immediate intervention."

Jessica blinked, her bravado faltering for a split second before she recovered her defensive posture. "Intervention? What protocol? I am the legally designated financial proxy for the Sterling estate. I transferred primary administrative rights to my phone through Mark's authorization code this afternoon. Arthur is financially incapacitated, and his assets are now under my jurisdiction. You have no business here."

Viktor slowly turned his head to look at Jessica. A faint, humorless smile touched the corners of his lips. "Mrs. Jessica Sterling. Or should I say, Jessica Vance—no relation," he added dryly. "You assume that possessing a secondary override code grants you ownership of a multi-million-dollar global trust. That is a fascinating legal theory. Entirely incorrect, of course, but fascinating."

Mark finally found his voice, a high-pitched, choked sound. "Viktor... please. Tell her. Tell her what she did."

"I would prefer to show her, Mark," Viktor replied, pulling a thick stack of embossed documents from his folder. "And more importantly, I need to show the actual owner of this house, who has been quietly observing this circus for the past hour."

The dining room descended into a suffocating quiet. Even Jessica's boisterous relatives had stopped chewing, sensing that the ground beneath their feet was about to give way.
