Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the AlleyThe heavy glass door of the clinic swung open, letting in a gust of frigid November wind. The man didn't introduce himself. He didn't need to. The air in the room instantly dropped ten degrees, heavy with an unspoken, suffocating authority.

"Briar Lennox?" His voice was deep, smooth as velvet, but laced with a razor-sharp edge that commanded absolute submission.
Briar clutched the mop handle like a lifeline, her knuckles turning white. "Who are you? We're closed. You need to take your animal to an emergency hospital in Manhattan—"
"My animal doesn't travel to hospitals," the man interrupted, taking two deliberate steps forward. "Hospitals come to him."
Two massive men in identical black suits stepped into the doorway behind him, blocking the only exit.
"I'm Damien Ashworth," he said casually, watching her reaction with hawk-like precision.
Briar’s breath hitched. Ashworth. The name alone was enough to make the blood run cold in the veins of every New Yorker. Smuggling, real estate, finance, blood money—rumor had it Damien Ashworth owned half the city and buried the other half.
"I don't care who you are," Briar said, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to sound brave. "I'm a clinic assistant, not a miracle worker. Take your dog somewhere else."

Damien stepped closer, invading her space until she could smell the expensive sandalwood and danger radiating off him. "My dog, Goliath, has not eaten a single morsel in thirty days. Five veterinary specialists told me to put him down. You stayed twelve hours past your shift to patch up a stray cat with a broken leg for free." He tilted his head, his dark eyes narrowing. "You don't care about money, Miss Lennox. You care about the hopeless. Goliath is the most hopeless creature in New York. Prove me wrong."
He didn't ask. He gestured to the guards, and before Briar could scream, a heavy black cloth bag was slipped over her head, and she was lifted off her feet.
