Chapter 9 - Awakening

Three days later, Owen opened his eyes.
The harsh fluorescent lights of the ICU were dimmed. The heavy, crushing weight on his chest was gone, replaced by a steady, rhythmic, powerful beat—a strong, healthy pulse that belonged to a new lease on life.
Sitting in a comfortable armchair beside his bed was Hannah, fast asleep with her head resting on the edge of the mattress, still clutching her red crayon and the drawing of the golden heart.
Owen smiled, feeling a surge of warmth he hadn't experienced in decades. He slowly raised his hand and gently stroked her tangled dark hair.
Hannah stirred, blinking sleepily. When she saw his eyes open, fully awake and clear, she gasped.
“Daddy?” she whispered, scrambling up onto the edge of the bed.
“Hey, kiddo,” Owen rasped, his voice soft. “I told you... billionaires don't break promises.”
Tears streamed down Hannah’s face as she leaned in and gently hugged his neck, careful not to disturb the monitors. “You came back.”
Just then, the door swung open. Arthur Sterling walked in, looking defeated, carrying a thick stack of resignation papers. Behind him stood the entire board of directors.
“Owen,” Arthur muttered, staring at the healthy flush on his cousin's face with undisguised horror. “The... the doctors said you wouldn't make it.”
Owen looked at Arthur, then down at the little girl holding his hand. The empire was secure, the corporate raiders were defeated, and his heart—both literally and figuratively—was entirely full.

“Arthur,” Owen said calmly, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “You have five minutes to clear your desk and leave my building. If you ever come near my family again, I won't just strip your shares—I’ll take everything else you own.”
Arthur swallowed hard, turned on his heel, and fled the room without another word.
