Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Arthur was not a man to make empty threats. Over the next month, the corporate pressure intensified. Leaks were planted in financial newspapers claiming that Owen Faulkner was mentally unstable and unfit to lead. Stock prices dipped slightly, and institutional investors began to whisper questions.

At the same time, social services intervened. An unexpected visit from a stern caseworker named Mrs. Gable threatened to uproot Hannah’s newfound peace.

Mrs. Gable sat in the grand parlor, her clipboard resting on her knee as she surveyed the opulent room with a skeptical eye.

“Mr. Faulkner, we have received anonymous reports that this adoption is a hasty, eccentric decision made by a terminally ill man with no immediate family support network,” Mrs. Gable stated coldly. “A child needs stability, a mother figure, and a healthy environment. Can you honestly provide that when your own medical prognosis is so grim?”

Hannah, who had been listening from behind the doorway, clutched her stuffed bear tightly, her lower lip trembling. She heard every word. He’s sick. He’s going to leave me, too.

Owen noticed the shadow by the door. He dismissed Mrs. Gable with a wave of his hand, his voice chillingly polite. “Mrs. Gable, you may leave your preliminary notes on the table. My legal team will handle all further communications. Marcus, show her out.”

Once the heavy oak doors closed, Owen walked over to the doorway and knelt down in front of Hannah.

“Did you believe what she said?” Hannah whispered, tears welling up in her dark eyes. “Are you going to leave me like the others?”

May you like

Owen took her small, warm hands in his. “Look at me, Hannah,” he said firmly. “I made a promise to you in that alley. Billionaires don't break promises. I might be sick, but my heart is stronger than it has ever been, because for the first time in my life, it has a reason to beat.”

She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. For the first time, she hugged him back with all her might.
