Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the Throne

The standoff on the wet docks of Berth 42 was tense, the only sound being the heavy downpour of rain and the idling hum of the shipping cranes.

"Drop your weapons," Carter ordered.

One by one, Derek’s men looked at the red dots on their chests, then at Carter’s cold, unyielding eyes. They knew the legend of Carter Blackwood. They knew he was a man who did not offer second chances.

With clattering sounds, the enforcers threw their guns onto the wet asphalt, raising their hands in surrender.

"You cowards!" Derek yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. He pointed his gun directly at Carter, his hands shaking violently. "I built this with you, Carter! I deserved more than just being your shadow! I deserved to be the king!"

"You were my brother, Derek," Carter said, his voice dropping to a quiet, tragic tone. "I would have given you anything. But you chose to sell your soul to a monster."

In a final, desperate act of madness, Dominic Crane tried to run toward his sedan.

Bang.

A single, precise shot from a sniper on the warehouse roof shattered the pavement directly in front of Dominic’s feet, sending him scrambling backward into the mud, sobbing in terror.

Silas Vance stood perfectly still, his silver-headed cane clutched tightly in his hand. He looked up at the shipping containers, where his granddaughters stood.

"Emma, Lily," Silas said, his voice trying to adopt a soft, grandfatherly tone that sounded entirely artificial. "Come down from there. You are Vances. Your place is with me. Do not trust this criminal. He will only use you."

"We know exactly who he is, Grandfather," Emma said, her eyes cold and unwavering. "And we know who you are. You killed our father because he wouldn't let you poison innocent people. You destroyed our family."

"We have the key, Grandfather," Lily added, holding up a small, encrypted flash drive. "We downloaded the entire mainframe of Vanguard and Vance Holdings. Every offshore account, every bribe, every illegal chemical shipment. We’ve already sent it to the federal authorities."

Silas’s face twisted into a mask of pure, ugly rage. He raised his cane, pointing it at the girls. "You miserable little—"

Before he could finish, Carter was in front of him.

With a movement so fast it was almost invisible, Carter grabbed the cane, snapped it in half over his knee, and grabbed Silas by the collar of his expensive coat, slamming him against the side of a shipping container.

"Your empire is gone, Silas," Carter whispered, his face inches from the old man's. "Your money is gone. Your family is gone. You are nothing."

He turned his head to look at Derek, who was still holding his gun, frozen in fear.

"Put the gun down, Derek," Carter said. "It's over."

Derek looked at Carter, then at the snipers, and finally at the cold, empty expanse of the ocean behind him. He realized there was no escape. The crown he had tried to steal had only ever belonged to one man.

With a defeated sob, Derek let the gun fall from his fingers. He sank to his knees in the rain, his head bowed in shame.

"Take them away," Carter ordered his men.

As his strike team moved in to secure the traitors, Carter walked over to the shipping containers. He reached his arms up, and one by one, he gently helped Emma and Lily climb down to the ground.
