Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Alley

The cold mud of the alleyway pressed against Carter Blackwood’s cheek, but he could barely feel it. The poison in his veins was a slow-freezing wave, locking his muscles one by one. His vision was a narrowing tunnel of gray.

Yet, his mind—the sharp, predatory engine that had allowed him to rule the West Coast underworld for fifteen years—refused to shut down.

"His pulse is fading," a quiet, steady voice whispered.

"I know this poison," a second voice replied.

Carter forced his eyelids to part by a fraction of a millimeter. In the dim amber glow of a distant streetlamp, he saw two identical faces. They couldn’t have been more than seven or eight years old. They wore matching navy-blue school uniforms, their blonde hair pulled back into neat ponytails.

But their eyes were wrong. They didn’t have the wide, panicked look of children stumbling upon a dying man. Their gaze was clinical, calculating, and heavy with a trauma that no child should ever carry.

"Emma," the first girl whispered, pointing a small finger at the heavy obsidian ring on Carter’s left hand. It was engraved with a roaring crow—the crest of the Blackwood Syndicate. "It’s him. The one Father told us to look for if the worst ever happened."

"We don’t have time, Lily," Emma said, her voice dropping to a sharp, commanding hiss. "Grandfather's men are at the end of the block. If they find us here with him..."

Heavy footsteps echoed from the mouth of the alley. The beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the darkness, splashing against the rusted metal of the dumpster.

"Check behind the dumpster," a rough, familiar voice commanded. It was one of Derek’s personal enforcers. "He couldn't have gone far. The boss said the venom takes exactly five minutes to paralyze the lungs."

Carter tried to draw a breath, but his chest felt like it was encased in solid concrete. He was a spectator in his own execution.

Suddenly, Emma reached into her oversized school backpack. She didn't pull out a toy or a book. Instead, she retrieved a small, pre-filled medical syringe. With practiced, terrifying ease, she flicked the glass barrel, popped the plastic cap off with her teeth, and looked at her sister.

"Hold his neck," Emma ordered.

Lily didn't hesitate. She pressed her small hands against Carter’s jawline, keeping his head perfectly still.

Plunge.

The needle sank deep into the muscle of Carter's shoulder. A searing, liquid fire erupted through his bloodstream, violently clashing with the icy paralysis of the poison. His back arched off the damp pavement in a silent gasp, his eyes flying wide open.

"Shh!" Lily whispered, pressing her palm over his mouth. "If you make a sound, we all die."

"Now, help me pull him," Emma muttered, grabbing the sleeve of Carter's expensive, blood-stained suit.

To any ordinary observer, two little girls trying to move a six-foot-two, fully grown man was an impossible task. But the girls weren't trying to carry him. They dragged him toward the back of the alley, where a loose wooden board in the dilapidated fence led to the overgrown backyard of an abandoned Victorian house.

Just as Carter's boots cleared the gap, the flashlight beam swept directly over the spot where he had been lying.

"Nothing here, boss," the enforcer called out. "Just some trash and some fresh blood. But no Blackwood."

"Keep searching!" Derek's voice boomed from the street, laced with a desperate, frantic edge. "If he survives the night, none of us see tomorrow!"

Inside the overgrown yard, hidden beneath the canopy of a weeping willow, Carter lay on his back, his lungs desperately drawing in the cold night air. The paralysis was receding, replaced by a agonizing, burning warmth.

He looked at the two girls standing over him, their small backpacks still slung over their shoulders.

"Who..." Carter choked out, his throat feeling like sandpaper. "Who are you?"

May you like

Emma capped the empty syringe and placed it back in her bag. She looked down at the legendary crime boss with a gaze that was entirely devoid of fear.

"We are the daughters of Dr. Julian Vance," she said quietly. "And you are the man who is going to help us kill our grandfather."
