Chapter 2 - The Truth in the Blood

The safehouse was a forgotten basement beneath an old, disused botanical greenhouse on the outskirts of East Los Angeles. Dust motes danced in the pale moonlight filtering through the cracked glass panes overhead.
Carter sat on a wooden crate, his body shivering as the last remnants of the toxin fought against the crude antidote Emma had injected into him. He was wrapping a clean piece of cloth around his scraped knuckles, his eyes never leaving the twins.
They had set up a small, surprisingly advanced chemical workstation on a rusted metal table. Vials of reagents, test tubes, and medical journals were neatly arranged.
"Your father was Julian Vance," Carter said, his voice still raspy. "The lead biochemist for the Vance Family cartel."
"Our grandfather, Silas Vance, forced him to make weapons," Lily said, her voice small but firm as she organized some glass slides. "Poisons that leave no trace in an autopsy. Like the one you drank tonight."
"The Nightshade Distillate," Emma added, holding up a small vial of blue liquid. "It was our father’s final creation. He realized Grandfather was going to use it to assassinate you and take over the West Coast ports. Father refused to hand over the final formula. So, Grandfather had him killed."
Carter’s eyes narrowed. The pieces of the puzzle were violently locking into place. "And Derek... my lieutenant. He was in on it."
"Derek Santos has been secretly meeting with Silas Vance for six months," Emma said. "We heard them talking in the study. Grandfather promised Derek absolute control of San Francisco if he delivered your head on a plate."
A cold, dark anger settled deep into Carter’s chest. Derek had been more than a lieutenant; he had been a brother. They had bled together in the trenches of the turf wars ten years ago. To know that his betrayal had been planned so meticulously, so ruthlessly, made the physical pain of the poison fade into insignificance.
"Why did you save me?" Carter asked, leaning forward, his shadow looming large against the brick wall. "I am not a good man, girls. I have ordered deaths. I have run empires built on vice. Why trust me?"
Emma stepped closer to him. She looked remarkably like her late father—intelligent, stubborn, and fiercely protective of her sister.
"Because our father left us a letter," she said, pulling a folded, yellowed piece of paper from her inner blazer pocket. "He said that despite what the world thinks of Carter Blackwood, you are a man of your word. He said you have a code. He told us that if he ever disappeared, we were to find you, show you this, and ask for sanctuary."
Carter took the letter. The handwriting was indeed Julian’s. He had known Julian briefly years ago; the chemist had once saved Carter's own father from a rare toxin.
Carter, the letter read. If my daughters have given you this, I am dead. My father, Silas, is a monster who will use my research to poison the entire coast. Protect my girls. In return, they will give you the one thing that can destroy Silas Vance forever: the key to his vault.
Carter slowly folded the letter and slipped it into his pocket. He looked at the twins. They were so young, yet their childhood had been completely stripped away by the cruelty of their own bloodline.
"Silas Vance thinks I’m dead," Carter said softly. "Derek thinks he has won. They are going to initiate the takeover of my territories tomorrow morning at the docks."

He stood up, his massive frame fully recovered, the strength returning to his limbs. He looked down at the twins, his expression hardening into a promise.
"You saved my life," Carter said. "Now, I am going to make sure your grandfather never takes another breath. But first, we need to gather my loyalists. Or what's left of them."
