Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By 4:00 AM, the rain had begun to fall, washing the grime of Los Angeles into the storm drains.
Inside an abandoned warehouse near the Port of Los Angeles, Derek Santos stood before a map of the city laid out on a steel table. Beside him stood Dominic Crane, the rival boss who had poisoned Carter's wine.
"Are you sure he's dead?" Dominic asked, his voice tight with anxiety. "Blackwood isn't a man you leave to chance, Derek. If he survived—"
"He didn't survive!" Derek snarled, slamming his fist onto the table. "The poison was inside him. He was coughing up blood. Even if he crawled out of that alley, he’s a corpse by now. My men are sweeping the hospitals just in case, but there’s nothing. We control the streets now."
"And Silas Vance?" Dominic asked.
"The old man is arriving from San Diego at dawn," Derek said, a greedy smile stretching across his face. "Once he signs off on the chemical distribution network through our docks, we will be richer than Blackwood ever dreamed. We just need to keep the transition quiet. The syndicate members still think Carter is on a 'sudden retreat.'"
While they celebrated their stolen kingdom, a black SUV sat parked in the shadows of a nearby overpass, its headlights turned off.
Inside the vehicle, Carter Blackwood sat in the driver’s seat. In the back sat Emma and Lily, their laptops open, their small fingers flying across the keyboards.
"We’ve bypassed the port’s security firewall," Emma reported, her screen reflecting off her glasses. "Grandfather's cargo ship, the Gorgon, is scheduled to dock at Berth 42 at 6:00 AM. It’s carrying the raw chemical shipments to mass-produce the poison."
"And Derek’s security?" Carter asked, adjusting the earpiece of his tactical radio.
"He’s moved all his loyalists to the main warehouse," Lily said. "But he made a mistake. He left the back-channel security cameras on the default port codes. We can see everything."
Carter looked at the rearview mirror, meeting the eyes of the two girls. "You two are too smart for your own good, you know that?"
"Father taught us," Lily said with a small, sad smile. "He said knowledge is the only weapon that never runs out of ammunition."
Carter’s phone buzzed. It was a secure, heavily encrypted line. He picked it up.
"Boss?" a trembling voice said on the other end. It was Marcus Webb, Carter's assistant who had looked so pale at the dinner.
"Marcus," Carter said, his voice like ice. "You have exactly ten seconds to tell me why you shouldn't join Dominic in a shallow grave."
"Boss! Oh my god, you're alive!" Marcus gasped, stifling a sob. "They... they held my family, boss! Derek’s men had a gun to my wife’s head at the hotel. I had no choice! I didn't know about the poison until it was too late!"
Carter stayed silent, letting the heavy, terrifying quiet stretch over the line. He knew when a man was lying, and he could hear the genuine, visceral terror in Marcus’s voice.
"Where is your family now, Marcus?" Carter asked quietly.
"They... they are being held at the safehouse on 4th Street," Marcus stammered. "Please, boss. I’ll do anything. I'll help you kill them all. Just save my family."
Carter looked at the dashboard clock. 5:12 AM. The storm was gathering, and the chessboard was set.
"Listen to me very carefully, Marcus," Carter said. "You are going to call Derek. You are going to tell him that you found a trace of me near the harbor. Tell him I’m weak, bleeding out, and hiding in the old engine room at Berth 42. Draw him there. Alone."
May you like
"Yes, boss. Anything. What about my family?"
"My people are already on their way to the safehouse," Carter said, nodding to a second tactical team he had activated via his encrypted network. "By the time you hang up, they will be safe. Now, play your part."
