Chapter 5 - The Shadow's Retaliation

Three months passed, and Clara’s life transformed into a beautiful dream. She accepted Roman’s offer, leaving the grueling hospital shifts behind. She spent her days managing the Vance Foundation’s new city-wide free clinics, ensuring thousands of low-income families received the care she had once struggled to afford. Her mother was moved to a luxurious private estate where the best doctors provided around-the-clock comfort.
And Roman was always there. What began as a professional arrangement quickly deepened into a fierce, unspoken romance. Roman courted her with an old-world elegance—quiet dinners at closed restaurants, late-night walks through private botanical gardens, and long conversations where the feared mafia boss opened his bruised soul to the only woman who held his trust.
But the underworld of Chicago never stayed quiet for long.
Dr. Grant Halpern, out on a multimillion-dollar bail and facing total ruin, had become completely unhinged. Desperate for revenge against the man who destroyed his life, he allied himself with a rival faction—the Moretti syndicate, Roman’s bitterest enemies.
It happened on a rainy Thursday evening. Clara was exiting the foundation’s downtown office when a dark van screeched to a halt in front of her.
Two men in ski masks jumped out, grabbing her arms. Clara screamed, fighting back, but they threw a cloth over her face. The scent of chloroform filled her lungs, and the world went black.
When she woke up, she was tied to a chair in the damp, concrete basement of an abandoned brewery by the river.
Standing in front of her, his clothes disheveled and his eyes bloodshot with madness, was Grant Halpern. He held a gleaming surgical scalpel in his hand.
"Look at you," Halpern mocked, tracing the flat edge of the blade along her jawline. "The little nurse who thought she could ruin a Halpern. Vance thinks he owns this city, but tonight, he’s going to watch his pretty little investment bleed out right in front of him."
Clara forced herself to stay calm, remembering everything Roman had taught her about survival. "Roman will kill you, Grant. There is no corner of this earth where you can hide from him."
"He has to survive the night first!" Halpern laughed hysterically. "The Moretti crew has already set an ambush at the docks. He’s walking right into a slaughterhouse to find you."
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the basement groaned.
The sound of automatic gunfire erupted from the floor above. Screams of Moretti soldiers echoed through the concrete rafters, followed by the heavy, systematic thudding of tactical boots.
Halpern panicked, turning toward the stairs. "What? No, they were supposed to be at the pier!"
The basement door was violently blown off its hinges by a controlled explosive charge. Smoke and dust flooded the room.
Through the haze, a towering figure emerged.
Roman Vance walked into the room. He wore a long black tactical coat, an automatic rifle held firmly in his hands. His face was a mask of pure, unadulterated fury—the face of a god of war who had come to reclaim his heart.
"Vance!" Halpern shrieked, grabbing Clara from behind and pressing the sharp edge of the scalpel against her throat. "Step back! Step back or I cut her jugular right now!"
Roman stopped ten feet away. The rifle in his hands remained perfectly steady, aimed directly at Halpern's forehead. His gray eyes were entirely devoid of human mercy.
"Grant," Roman said, his voice a low, terrifying vibration that shook the very foundation of the room. "Three months ago, I warned you never to touch her again. You chose to ignore the ledger."
"I'll do it! I'll kill her!" Halpern screamed, his hand shaking violently against Clara’s skin.
Clara caught Roman’s eye through the smoke. Roman gave a microscopic nod.
In a split second of pure instinct, Clara threw her head backward, slamming her skull directly into Halpern’s nose. Halpern howled in pain, his grip loosening as blood erupted from his face.
BANG.
A single, precise shot echoed through the basement. Halpern collapsed backward onto the concrete, the scalpel clattering harmlessly away as Leo and the tactical team swarmed the room, securing the perimeter.
Roman dropped his rifle, rushing forward. He fell to his knees in front of Clara, his hands working with frantic speed to cut the ropes binding her wrists. The moment she was free, he pulled her into his arms, crushing her against his chest as if he would never let her go.

"Clara," he whispered, his voice cracking with a rare, raw emotion. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I let them take you."
Clara buried her face into his neck, her tears soaking into his collar. "I knew you’d come," she sobbed. "I wasn't afraid. I knew my shield would come."
