Chapter 4 - The Terms of Protection

The VIP suite was spacious, dimly lit, and smelled of high-end wood smoke and fresh linens. Roman sat in an armchair near the window, a dark silk robe over his shoulders, looking through a stack of legal documents.

When Clara entered, he closed the folder and looked up. The cold, lethal aura that had terrified the boardroom was entirely absent. His features softened, a quiet, reassuring warmth reflecting in his gray eyes.

"Clara," he said gently, gesturing to the chair opposite him. "Please, sit."

Clara remained standing, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. "Did you do this?" she whispered, holding up the bank receipts. "The flowers? My mother's facility? Halpern?"

"Halpern dug his own grave," Roman replied smoothly. "I simply provided the shovel. As for your mother and your loans... consider it a professional consultation fee for saving my life."

"It's too much," Clara said, her voice shaking with emotion. "I'm just a nurse, Mr. Vance. I did what I was trained to do. You don't owe me a lifetime of financial freedom."

Roman slowly stood up, leaning slightly on his cane as he walked over to her. He stopped just a foot away, his presence commanding but entirely non-threatening.

"In my world, Clara, loyalty and kindness are the rarest currencies. People come to me to exploit me, to betray me, or to beg for my destruction. You looked at a bleeding man with a gun under his coat, and your only instinct was to shield him and heal him."

He reached out, his long, scarred fingers hovering near her auburn hair, before gently tucking a loose strand behind her ear. His touch was incredibly light, a stark contrast to the violence she had experienced from Halpern.

"When that bastard touched you, he insulted the very concept of grace," Roman said, his voice deep and resonant. "I decided then that you would never be vulnerable to the cruelty of men like him again."

Clara looked up into his gray eyes, feeling a sudden, intense heat blooming in her chest. For years, she had been entirely alone, carrying the crushing weight of her family’s survival on her bruised shoulders. For the first time in her life, someone was standing in front of her, offering to bear the weight for her.

"But you're... you're a dangerous man," Clara whispered honestly. "I see the guards. I know what the city whispers about the Vance name."

Roman smiled faintly, a trace of dangerous charm touching his lips. "I am a monster to my enemies, Clara. That is true. But to you? I will only ever be a shield. I want to offer you a position. Leave this hospital. Become my private medical coordinator. Oversee my recovery, manage my family’s medical charity foundations, and live a life where nobody can ever tell you that you are replaceable."

Clara swallowed hard, her heart racing. "And if I say no?"

Roman leaned down slightly, his eyes locked onto hers. "Then the money stays paid, your mother remains safe, and I will protect you from the shadows. But I would much prefer it if you stayed where I could see you."
