Chapter 2 - The Audit

By Wednesday morning, the atmosphere inside Lakeview Memorial had completely shifted. A suffocating silence had descended upon the executive floors.

Dr. Grant Halpern walked into the hospital at 9:00 a.m. sharp, his tailored cashmere coat swinging open, a smirk on his face as he prepared for a meeting with the hospital's Chief Executive Officer. He assumed the meeting was to finalize the construction of the new "Halpern Wing," funded by his wealthy estate.

Instead, when he entered the mahogany-lined boardroom, the CEO was standing by the window, sweating through his expensive suit.

Sitting at the head of the long conference table was not a board member.

It was a man in a flawless gray three-piece suit. A silk tie hid the surgical dressings beneath his shirt, and a cane topped with a silver wolf's head rested against his chair. His face was pale from blood loss, but his presence was absolute.

Roman Vance.

Flanking him were Leo and four other men whose tailored suits failed to hide the tactical holsters beneath their arms.

"Ah, Dr. Halpern," Roman said, his voice smooth, elegant, and chillingly calm. "Please, sit."

Halpern blinked, his usual arrogance flaring up. "What is the meaning of this? Arthur," he directed at the CEO, "who is this man, and why is he sitting in my family's ancestral chair?"

The CEO swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "Grant... sit down. Mr. Vance... Mr. Vance has just purchased the outstanding debt of the entire hospital network. As of eight o'clock this morning, his holding company owns fifty-one percent of the board's voting shares."

Halpern’s breath hitched. "That's impossible. Lakeview is a private estate-backed institution—"

"Everything has a price, Doctor," Roman interrupted, leaning forward. The steel-gray eyes that had watched Halpern from Bed Four now locked onto the surgeon with a predatory intensity. "Especially an institution with a few hidden financial liabilities. I bought your board, Halpern. Which means, effectively, I own the air you breathe inside these walls."

Halpern straightened his tie, trying to regain his composure. "Fine. You’re a powerful man, Mr. Vance. I saved your life in the trauma bay yesterday. If this is about your medical bill—"

"You didn't save my life," Roman said softly, tapping his silver cane against the floor. The sound echoed like a gunshot in the silent room. "A young nurse named Clara Bennett saved my life by re-inflating my lung while you were admiring your own reflection in the glass. You, however... you did something else."

Roman slowly stood up from the chair, wincing slightly as his abdominal stitches pulled, but his posture remained towering. He walked around the table, stopping a mere inch from Halpern.

"I have a long memory, Dr. Halpern. And I am very particular about how people treat the things that belong to me."

"Clara Bennett doesn't belong to you," Halpern hissed, his aristocratic arrogance overriding his survival instinct. "She's a low-level staff nurse. A dime a dozen. She's replaceable."

The air in the room instantly vanished. Leo took a step forward, his hand moving toward his jacket, but Roman raised a single finger to stop him.

"Nobody is replaceable," Roman whispered, his voice dropping to a terrifying register. "Especially not her. Yesterday, you used your right hand to assault a woman who was too vulnerable to fight back because she has a sick mother and a mountain of debt. You thought your name protected you."

Roman leaned in closer, his breath cold against Halpern’s ear. "I am going to strip that name away until you are nothing but a ghost in this city. You will not touch her. You will not look at her. And by the end of this week, you will beg me for the right to hold a scalpel again."

Roman turned away, his coat billowing. "Leo. Initiate the audit on the Halpern medical estate. Every malpractice suit they buried, every tax evasion scheme, every fraudulent research grant. Tear it down."

"Yes, boss," Leo replied with a grim smile.

Halpern stood frozen, the color completely draining from his face as he realized the monster he had accidentally awakened.
