Chapter 1 - The Morning After & The Boardroom Ambush

The emergency board meeting of Apex Global Holdings was called for precisely 7:00 AM.

At 6:45 AM, Robert Blackwell was pacing back and forth in his corner office, sweat soaking through the collar of his tailored Italian shirt. Across from him, Vivian sat on the leather couch, holding a cup of espresso, her brow furrowed in irritation.

"Robert, you are completely overreacting," Vivian said, taking a slow sip. "She’s just some woman with a few shares who threw a temper tantrum because I reminded her of her place. Who wears a plain dress with no jewelry to an executive gala? She looked like a nanny."

"Shut up, Vivian! Just shut up!" Robert snapped, slamming his fist onto his mahogany desk. "Do you have any idea who Evelyn Hart is? She doesn't just have 'a few shares.' When the founding cartel backed this company ten years ago, Evelyn put up eighty percent of the venture capital under a private trust! She holds sixty-two percent of the voting power! She is the company!"

Vivian’s espresso cup trembled slightly. "Sixty-two percent? But... you’re the CEO!"

"Because she allowed me to be!" Robert yelled, his voice cracking.

Before Vivian could respond, the heavy frosted-glass doors of the executive boardroom opened down the hall.

Evelyn Hart walked in.

She wore a crisp, tailored navy suit, her hair pulled into a sharp, elegant chignon. She carried no designer purse—only a leather portfolio. Beside her walked Arthur Vance, the most feared corporate attorney in the state.

Every board member was already seated, sitting up rigid and silent. Nobody dared look Robert in the eye as he stumbled into the room, Vivian trailing nervously behind him.

"Ms. Hart," Arthur Vance announced, his voice reverberating off the marble walls. "As the majority shareholder controlling sixty-two percent of Apex Global, calls this extraordinary session to order."

Evelyn took her seat at the head of the long table—the seat Robert usually occupied. She looked directly at Robert, her expression unreadable.

"Robert," Evelyn said smoothly, her voice cool as ice. "Yesterday, your wife informed my four-year-old daughter that people like us belong at the service entrance. Today, we are going to determine who actually belongs in this building."
