CHAPTER 7 – THE TWO SONS

CHAPTER 7 – THE TWO SONS

The hidden staircase descended nearly two hundred feet beneath the tower.

Emergency lights flickered to life one by one, revealing concrete walls untouched for decades.

The air smelled of dust, rust, and forgotten history.

I walked first.

Not because I was the strongest.

Because I was a father.

Eli held tightly to Vivian's hand.

Damon followed behind us, pistol raised.

The sounds of gunfire above grew fainter as thick steel doors sealed the underground entrance.

For the first time all night...

There was silence.

Until the computers awakened.

Hundreds of dormant monitors lit up across an enormous underground control room.

Rows of servers hummed back to life.

On every screen appeared the same message:

SEARCHING FOR SUBJECT SEVEN...

SEARCHING FOR SUBJECT NINE...

Then another voice echoed through the chamber.

Unlike the cold mechanical announcement from before, this one sounded almost human.

"Protocol Genesis has resumed."

"Final synchronization begins in fourteen minutes."

Vivian looked around in horror.

"This place is still running."

Damon nodded grimly.

"They designed it to survive everything."

Nuclear war.

Government collapse.

Even time.

One monitor suddenly switched to a live traffic camera.

Danny.

He had just climbed into his pickup truck after work.

A convoy of black SUVs appeared behind him.

"They found him," I whispered.

My heart nearly stopped.

Danny drove away, unaware he was being followed.

Then something happened that made tears fill my eyes.

He looked into his rearview mirror once.

Twice.

Three times.

Without hesitation, he took an unexpected turn into a crowded industrial district.

"He knows," I said proudly.

Vivian looked at me.

"He can tell they're following him."

I smiled despite everything.

"I taught him years ago."

"When the world never feels safe, you learn to notice the things everyone else misses."

Danny wasn't running because he was afraid.

He was running because he'd recognized a pattern.

The same gift that had once made strangers label him "different" was now saving his life.

Suddenly, every monitor flashed red.

SUBJECT SEVEN APPROACHING.

SYNC POSSIBILITY: 97.8%.

The reinforced blast doors at the far end of the chamber slowly opened.

Not because Danny had arrived.

Because someone else had brought him.

A dozen armed men marched inside.

Between them...

Danny.

His hands were bound.

His face bruised.

But his eyes...

His eyes immediately found mine.

"Dad."

One word.

Steady.

Calm.

"I'm okay."

I wanted to run to him.

Instead, I noticed something.

His fingers were moving.

Tiny movements behind his back.

Tap...

Tap...

Tap-tap...

The same code Eli had used.

Danny was telling me something.

I translated instinctively.

DON'T FIGHT.

WAIT.

He already had a plan.

Dr. Miriam Voss stepped into the chamber from another doorway.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakably the woman from the recording.

She smiled as though greeting old friends.

"How wonderful."

"My two greatest successes are finally together."

"You experimented on children," Vivian spat.

"I educated extraordinary minds."

"You destroyed families."

"I saved humanity."

She pressed a button.

The floor beneath Danny and Eli illuminated with intersecting circles.

"The synchronization can finally begin."

"No!" I shouted.

I lunged forward.

Armed guards stopped me instantly.

Voss never even looked at me.

She looked only at Danny and Eli.

"Do you know why neither of you ever fit into the world?"

"Because your brains were never designed for ordinary lives."

"They were designed to work together."

She activated the final sequence.

Machines roared to life.

Lights surrounded both young men.

Then...

Everything stopped.

Danny smiled.

"So..."

"You still use the same operating system?"

Voss frowned.

"What?"

Danny nodded toward the central server.

"You never updated it."

"I noticed from the ventilation timing."

The old woman turned pale.

Before she could react...

Every monitor went black.

Danny had been tapping his fingers against the restraints the entire time.

Not randomly.

He had memorized the access rhythm from the machine vibrations.

May you like

The restraints unlocked.

He was free.
