CHAPTER 5 – THE FATHER'S CHOICE

CHAPTER 5 – THE FATHER'S CHOICE

For several long seconds, nobody moved.

The only sound was the steady drip of water from the sprinkler system.

Everyone stared at the monitor.

Danny.

My Danny.

Twenty-seven years old.

Alive.

Completely unaware that strangers had placed a target on his back.

My chest tightened until it hurt to breathe.

The distorted voice filled the lobby again.

"You have sixty minutes."

"If Danny disappears first..."

"Eli lives."

"If Eli disappears first..."

"Danny lives."

"You choose."

The screen went black.

"No!" I roared.

My voice echoed through the darkened lobby.

Vivian grabbed my arm.

"Dale..."

I shook her off.

"They're lying."

Damon nodded immediately.

"Of course they're lying."

"They've spent decades manipulating people through fear."

I turned toward him, fury burning through every word.

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"You knew my son was involved."

"I didn't know he was alive."

That answer stopped me.

"What?"

Damon looked genuinely shaken.

"The children who left the program were all marked as 'lost subjects.'"

"Danny disappeared from every database."

"I believed someone had erased him."

"I never stopped searching."

I wanted to hate him.

Part of me still did.

But another part realized something terrifying.

If Damon had spent years looking for Danny...

Then someone even more powerful had been hiding him.

Vivian slowly knelt beside Eli.

The little boy had curled into a ball beneath the reception desk.

He wasn't crying.

He was listening.

Listening to sounds no one else noticed.

His fingers tapped softly against the yellow toy sun.

Tap...

Tap...

Tap-tap...

Tap...

I watched the rhythm.

Something about it felt deliberate.

Not random.

A pattern.

"Dale," Damon whispered.

"Does he always do that?"

"Only when he's trying to communicate."

Vivian looked up.

"What is he saying?"

"I don't know."

Then I froze.

Danny used to tap exactly like that.

Not to soothe himself.

To count.

Hidden rhythms.

Patterns.

Maps.

I grabbed a pen and began writing the sequence on the back of an old work order.

Tap...

Tap...

Tap-tap...

Tap...

Pause.

Repeat.

Suddenly my eyes widened.

"No way..."

"What?" Vivian asked.

"It isn't a rhythm."

"It's Morse code."

Everyone stared at me.

I translated slowly.

One letter at a time.

B... 2...

Pause.

E...

Pause.

L... O... W...

"Below."

I looked at Eli.

His eyes met mine.

He nodded once.

Very slightly.

"The basement," I whispered.

"Something's beneath the building."

Damon's face changed instantly.

"My God..."

Vivian turned toward him.

"What?"

"The original laboratory."

Twenty-two years earlier, before Cole Technologies purchased the property, the tower had belonged to a neuroscience contractor funded by several defense agencies.

Officially...

The underground research center had been demolished.

Unofficially...

Only the entrances had been sealed.

"It still exists?" I asked.

Damon nodded.

"They couldn't destroy it."

"Too much evidence."

"So they buried it."

Vivian stared at him.

"You never told me."

"I was trying to protect you."

She laughed bitterly.

"Protect me?"

"Our son has been hunted his entire life!"

Before Damon could answer—

BOOM!

The lobby shook violently.

Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.

Another explosion.

Not outside.

Below us.

The basement.

Someone had already found the entrance.

Emergency lights flickered.

Security monitors rebooted one by one.

Every camera inside the parking garage came online.

Dozens of black SUVs.

Armed men.

Far more than before.

One hundred?

Maybe more.

This wasn't a kidnapping anymore.

It was a military-style operation.

One guard whispered,

"We're surrounded."

"No," Damon corrected.

"They're digging."

The security feed switched automatically to Basement Level Three.

A reinforced steel blast door filled the screen.

The attackers had attached industrial cutting torches.

Bright sparks flew across the metal.

"They're opening the lab."

Then every monitor changed again.

A woman appeared.

Gray hair.

Calm eyes.

A white laboratory coat.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Good evening, Damon."

Damon staggered backward.

His face drained of color.

"It can't be..."

Vivian frowned.

"Who is she?"

He answered so quietly I almost didn't hear him.

"Dr. Miriam Voss."

"You know her?"

"I watched her die."

The woman smiled.

"Clearly not."

She folded her hands.

"If you're seeing this, then my contingency plan succeeded."

"My congratulations."

"You managed to keep Subjects Seven and Nine alive."

I looked around.

"Subjects?"

She continued.

"One child processes emotion through pattern."

"The other processes pattern through emotion."

"When united..."

"They complete the sequence."

The room fell silent.

I looked at Eli.

Then I thought of Danny.

My son.

What sequence?

The recording continued.

"The research was never about autism."

"It was about prediction."

"Our brains constantly calculate the future."

"Most people do it poorly."

"But a very small number of children..."

"...see patterns others cannot."

"They anticipate events before they happen."

"They recognize mathematical relationships instinctively."

"They solve impossible systems."

She smiled.

"And governments pay fortunes for that ability."

Vivian whispered,

"They experimented on children..."

May you like

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew.
