CHAPTER 3 – THE MAN WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD

CHAPTER 3 – THE MAN WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD

The lobby fell into an unnatural silence.

Even the alarms seemed farther away.

The man stepped out of the elevator with measured confidence, his polished shoes leaving perfect prints across the wet marble floor.

Vivian couldn't breathe.

"No..." she whispered. "You died."

The stranger smiled.

"So that's what they told you."

His voice was calm, almost warm.

The same voice that had once read bedtime stories to Eli.

"Damon Cole," one of the attackers said, lowering his weapon.

The others followed immediately.

Not out of fear.

Out of respect.

I noticed everything.

The men weren't protecting Damon.

They were obeying him.

Vivian stood frozen.

"You let me bury you."

"I let the world believe I was dead."

"Why?"

"Because disappearing was the only way to build something much bigger than Cole Technologies."

My grip tightened around the wrench.

This wasn't a family reunion.

It was a takeover.

Damon's eyes drifted toward Eli.

"My son has grown."

Vivian immediately stepped in front of the boy.

"You stay away from him."

For the first time, Damon frowned.

"I didn't come here to hurt Eli."

"You brought armed men into my building!"

"I brought professionals because I knew you would never come willingly."

Vivian laughed bitterly.

"You've lost your mind."

"No."

"I've finally finished what I started."

He reached into his jacket.

Every weapon in the lobby lifted.

I prepared to move.

Instead of a gun, Damon removed a small silver flash drive.

"The future."

Vivian stared at it.

Then her face lost every trace of color.

"No..."

"You kept it?"

"I never destroy valuable things."

My instincts screamed.

Whatever was on that drive mattered more than the company.

More than the money.

Maybe even more than Eli.

"You have one minute," Damon said.

"Come upstairs with me."

"Bring Eli."

"And nobody else gets hurt."

Vivian shook her head.

"I'll never let you near him."

Damon sighed.

"You still don't understand."

"He isn't the hostage."

"He's the key."

Those words echoed through the lobby.

The child psychologists exchanged confused looks.

The employees whispered nervously.

I looked down at Eli.

He wasn't watching Damon.

He was staring at the flash drive.

His fingers began tracing invisible circles across his toy sun.

Exactly the way Danny used to when something familiar appeared.

Why?

Had he seen that object before?

Then Eli did something nobody expected.

He spoke.

One word.

"Daddy."

The entire room froze.

Vivian burst into tears.

Doctors had spent years trying to make Eli speak.

Nothing.

Not a sound.

Now...

one word.

Directed at the man standing twenty feet away.

Damon's expression softened.

For just a second.

Then it disappeared.

"I've missed you too, son."

The emotional moment lasted exactly three seconds.

A sharp crack echoed from outside.

SNAP!

Glass exploded behind Damon.

A sniper round slammed into the marble floor inches from his feet.

Everyone dropped.

Another shot.

CRACK!

One of Damon's men collapsed instantly.

Blood spread across the polished floor.

"Sniper!" someone screamed.

The attackers scattered for cover.

I pulled Vivian and Eli behind the reception desk.

"Stay down!"

Damon rolled behind a stone column, speaking rapidly into an earpiece.

"Who fired?"

Static.

No answer.

A third shot shattered another window.

This sniper wasn't working with Damon.

Someone else had entered the game.

Someone willing to kill everyone.

The building's emergency radio suddenly crackled.

"Unknown armed personnel detected on neighboring rooftops."

Security didn't know who they were.

Neither did Damon.

For the first time since stepping out of the elevator...

I saw genuine concern in his eyes.

He whispered one sentence.

"They found us."

Vivian heard him.

"Who found us?"

May you like

Damon looked directly at her.

"The people I spent three years hiding from."
