Chapter 9 - The House on the Hill

Three months later, the Manhattan skyline looked entirely different through the clean, unbroken glass of a newly renovated brownstone in Brooklyn Heights.
The morning sun poured across hardwood floors, illuminating a kitchen where the smell of fresh coffee and cinnamon toast filled the air. Emily Marcus stood by the counter, wearing a comfortable knitted sweater, laughing as her little brother Leo—now back in school and fully recovered—debated the finer points of comic book lore with a visiting tutor.
The front door opened with a soft click.
Enzo Dante stepped inside, shaking the light autumn drizzle from his tailored coat. He no longer wore the rigid, impenetrable armor of a hunted underworld king; the lines around his eyes were softer, his demeanor relaxed and unhurried.
He tossed his keys onto the entry table and walked into the kitchen, leaning down to scratch behind the ears of a massive, scarred dog stretched out lazily across the kitchen rug. Siri let out a contented, low rumble, thumping his tail against the floorboards.
Enzo walked over to the counter, wrapping his arms gently around Emily’s waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder as he looked out the window toward the harbor.
"The shipping registries are fully secured," Enzo murmured softly, kissing her cheek. "The Iron Helix has been dismantled down to its last foundation stone. You and Leo are completely safe."
Emily turned in his arms, smiling up at him, her hands resting naturally against his chest. "I know. The agency called yesterday offering me a senior management position in their corporate catering division."
Enzo raised an eyebrow, a faint, amused smile touching his lips. "And what did you tell them?"

"I told them to lose my number," Emily laughed, standing on her tiptoes to kiss him properly. "I have a much better job now."
In the corner of the sunlit room, Siri rested his heavy head on his paws, watching them with calm, clear eyes—finally home, forever.
