Chapter 7 - Betrayal in the Archives

The private server level smelled of chilled ozone and humming server racks. The blue LED lights cast long, eerie shadows across the polished concrete floor as Enzo and Emily moved cautiously down the corridor, Siri padding silently beside them like a dark phantom.
At the end of the hall, the heavy steel door of the server room stood ajar. A soft, warm light spilled out into the corridor.
They crept up to the threshold and peered inside.
Standing before the central console was Maria, the older housekeeper who had greeted Emily with warm Italian phrases just twenty-four hours earlier. Her gray hair was neatly tied back, but her hands—usually so steady and gentle—were typing furiously into the terminal, downloading the encrypted data stream directly onto a secure military flash drive.
"Maria," Enzo’s voice cut through the hum of the servers like a razor blade.
The old woman froze. She didn't drop her hands, but slowly turned her head. There was no fear in her eyes—only a profound, weary sadness.
"Mr. Dante," Maria said softly, her voice steady. "I was hoping you wouldn't come down here yourself. It would have been cleaner."
"Fourteen years, Maria," Enzo said, stepping into the room, his pistol held at his side, aimed at the floor but ready. "You handled my household, you managed my accounts, you watched over my people. Why?"
"Because empires fall, Enzo, and the Iron Helix is eternal," Maria said quietly, turning to face him fully. Her fingers slipped away from the keyboard, resting on the edge of the console. "They took my grandson three months ago. They held him in a black-site shipping container off the docks. They told me if I didn't deliver the bio-key when Siri was brought back into this penthouse, they would send him home in pieces."
Emily’s chest tightened with a wave of agonizing empathy. She stepped into the room beside Enzo. "I understand," Emily said softly. "I know what it's like to have someone hold your family hostage."
Maria looked at Emily, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I am sorry, child. Truly. But a grandmother's debt is a heavy thing."
Suddenly, Maria’s hand slammed down onto a red emergency toggle switch on the side of the console.
CLANG!
Heavy steel blast doors slammed down from the ceiling in the doorway behind them, cutting off the corridor and trapping Enzo, Emily, and Siri inside the server room. At the same time, the emergency sprinklers overhead hissed to life, flooding the room with a thick, choking cloud of chemical halon gas designed to suffocate oxygen and fry electronics.
"Enzo!" Emily choked out, coughing as the heavy, sweet-smelling gas hit her lungs.
Enzo didn't hesitate. He raised his pistol and fired three rapid shots directly into the electronic locking mechanism of the blast door, but the reinforced alloy held firm against the lead. The room grew darker as the power systems short-circuited under the chemical deluge.
Siri let out a deep, ferocious bark, rearing up against the steel door and slamming his massive shoulders into the seam with the force of a battering ram. The metal groaned under the impact, but held.
"The ventilation shaft!" Enzo shouted over the hiss of the gas, grabbing Emily by the arm and pulling her toward a narrow maintenance grate set high into the rear wall of the server room. "Give me a boost!"
Emily coughed, her vision swimming as the oxygen levels plummeted. She grabbed Siri’s collar. "Siri, up!"
The dog needed no encouragement. With a powerful leap, Siri vaulted onto the server racks, clawing his way up to the ledge of the ventilation shaft, using his massive paws to kick the rusted metal grille clear off its hinges.

"Go!" Enzo yelled, lifting Emily by her waist and thrusting her upward into the dark, narrow tunnel. Emily scrambled inside, dragging the suffocating air into her lungs, and immediately reached back down, grabbing Siri’s heavy collar with both hands while Enzo pushed from below with superhuman strength.
With a final, desperate heave, Enzo shoved Siri and himself up into the cramped duct just as the server room door blew inward from an external explosive charge set by Maria’s handlers.
