Chapter 8 - The Siege of Pier 42

The rain was lashing sideways across the concrete expanse of Pier 42 by the time Enzo’s armored black sedans tore through the chain-link perimeter gates. Inside the lead vehicle, Emily sat shivering in a dry tactical jacket Enzo had tossed her, Siri resting his heavy head across her lap, his breathing steady and calm.
In the passenger seat, Enzo reloaded a secondary magazine into his sidearm, his face illuminated by the green glow of a tactical tablet tracking real-time satellite feeds.
"Maria didn't just want the data for herself," Enzo said coldly, his eyes fixed on the sprawling, rusted container ship docked at the end of the pier. "She was leading us straight to their primary extraction point. The Iron Helix leadership is onboard that vessel, preparing to move the entire operation offshore before dawn."
"And my brother?" Emily asked, her voice tight with terror as she gripped Siri’s collar. "If they have Maria's grandson, they might have Leo too."
Enzo turned his head, looking at her with a stark, unyielding intensity. "We are going to find out. And we are going to burn their entire operation to the ground."
The sedans screeched to a halt beside a towering stack of shipping containers near the gangway of the cargo ship. Mateo and twelve heavily armed operatives spilled out into the pouring rain, forming a tactical perimeter around the loading ramp.
"Move in!" Mateo shouted over the roar of the wind and crashing waves.
The raid was swift, brutal, and absolute. The Iron Helix operatives, caught off guard by the sheer speed and ferocity of Enzo’s counter-offensive, were overwhelmed within minutes. Gunfire echoed off the corrugated metal walls of the ship's cargo hold as Enzo led his men down the labyrinthine corridors of the vessel.
Emily stayed close behind Enzo, Siri moving like a dark, silent shadow at their flank, neutralizing any threat that emerged from the shadows with terrifying, disciplined precision.
They reached the main cargo bay at the center of the ship.
There, tied to metal chairs beneath the harsh glare of overhead halogen lamps, were two figures: Maria’s young grandson, and sitting right beside him, pale and shivering, was Leo.
"Leo!" Emily screamed, dropping to her knees and rushing across the metal floor.
"Emily!" Leo cried out, coughing as Emily frantically untied the plastic zip-ties binding his wrists. "They grabbed me from the apartment—they said if you didn't bring the dog—"
"I've got you. I'm right here," Emily sobbed, pulling her little brother into a tight, fierce embrace.
Before they could stand, a cold, metallic click echoed behind them.
Enzo spun around, raising his pistol, but stopped. Standing on the metal catwalk above the cargo bay was Viktor Vance, the elusive head of the Iron Helix syndicate, holding a high-caliber weapon pressed firmly against the temple of an elderly woman—Maria.
Maria was weeping openly, her face bruised and bleeding, looking down at her rescued grandson with desperate eyes.
"Put the weapons down, Dante," Viktor shouted over the roar of the ship's engines starting up. "Or the old woman and the boy take a bullet right now. The dog comes with me. The data stays with me. You walk away with nothing."
Enzo stood tall in the center of the bay, his pistol lowered an inch, his expression an absolute mask of lethal calm. "Viktor. You always did have a terrible habit of overestimating your leverage."
"Drop the gun, Enzo!" Viktor roared, pressing the barrel harder against Maria's temple.
Enzo didn't drop his gun. Instead, he simply whistled—a short, sharp, two-note melody that echoed piercingly through the cavernous cargo hold.
Viktor frowned, confused. "What kind of—"
He didn't finish the sentence.
Siri didn't bark. He didn't groww. He simply launched himself off the metal deck, bounding up the steel stairs to the catwalk with terrifying, silent acceleration. Before Viktor could pull the trigger, the massive, scarred beast slammed into him like a freight train, sending Viktor’s weapon clattering over the edge into the dark water below, pinning the syndicate leader flat against the grated iron floor.

Mateo and his team swarmed the upper catwalks in a wave of tactical precision, securing the perimeter and zip-tying the remaining guards in seconds.
The war was over.
