Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage and the First Crack

Dawn broke over Manhattan like a bruised peach, staining the floor-to-ceiling glass of the penthouse in shades of amber and violet. Emily stood by the window, wrapped in a heavy silk robe Maria had quietly left outside her door, watching the distant toy-like cars crawl across the bridges.

Siri sat faithfully at her heel, his massive head resting against her calf.

The door to the suite opened with a quiet click, and Enzo stepped inside. He had already changed into a fresh, impeccably tailored charcoal suit, his silver-trimmed watch catching the morning light. He set a tablet computer on the low marble table beside her.

"Your agency has been handled," Enzo said briskly, pouring himself a cup of black coffee from the service cart Maria had brought up. "Your handler received a very generous buyout contract. You are officially on an indefinite leave of absence from the catering circuit."

Emily spun around, her eyes flashing. "You can't just buy my life, Mr. Dante! I have a life, I have rent, I have—"

"You have a little brother named Leo who relies on specialized neurological medication that costs four thousand dollars a month," Enzo interrupted smoothly, sipping his coffee. "Medication that your current catering wages cover by a razor-thin margin every thirty days."

Emily froze, the blood draining from her face. "How do you know about Leo?"

"I told you, Miss Marcus. I own information," Enzo said, his tone entirely devoid of cruelty, matter-of-fact and absolute. "Leo’s prescriptions were paid for yesterday at 4:15 PM by an anonymous trust account. The same account will continue to cover his medical expenses, housing, and college tuition indefinitely, provided you cooperate with what comes next."

Emily stared at him, a cocktail of fury and helpless relief churning in her chest. "You're bribing me."

"I'm securing my perimeter," Enzo corrected smoothly. "And offering you a shield. The Iron Helix isn't just a group of street thieves; they are a corporate-tier syndicate with deep ties to customs enforcement, financial institutions, and my own rivals within the city. They know Siri is back in my possession. By noon today, they will know a catering girl unlocked him."

He stepped closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers with intense, unflinching gravity. "They will look for leverage against me. And right now, you and your brother are the biggest blinking targets in New York."

Before Emily could process the weight of his words, a sharp, urgent buzz echoed from the security panel by the private elevator foyer.

Mateo strode into the room, his face tight, a tablet flashing red in his hand. "Boss. We have a breach in the lower-tier logistics network. The harbor warehouse on Pier 42 just went dark. And... there’s a localized signal ping coming from the service elevator shaft."

Enzo’s calm demeanor vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by a cold, lethal focus. He didn't panic; he simply moved like a machine shifting into combat gear. He drew a sleek, suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster with fluid grace, checking the slide with a sharp click.

"They didn't wait for noon," Enzo murmured, his gaze shifting to Emily. "Stay behind the reinforced glass. Do not move."

"What about Siri?" Emily asked, her voice cracking as the dog rose to his feet, hackles raised, low thunder rolling in his chest again.

"Siri stays with you," Enzo said, already turning toward the door. "Let's see who thinks they can walk into my house uninvited."
