Chapter 5 - Unspoken Bonds

Over the next two weeks, the atmosphere inside the Caruso estate began to shift in subtle, beautiful ways.
The cold, sterile mansion gradually filled with warmth. Elise brought life back into rooms that had been dark for months. She filled vases with fresh wildflowers from the gardens, opened the heavy velvet drapes to let the sunlight stream in, and played classical piano music in the living room while the twins napped.
And the girls... they blossomed under her care.
Maisie took her very first unsteady steps across the sunroom rug, tumbling straight into Elise’s waiting arms, while Rosie babbled her very first coherent words: "Li-Li," her adorable attempt at saying Elise’s name.
I found myself coming home earlier from the office every day.
Where I used to stay late at my corporate headquarters to escape the suffocating silence of my empty house, I now found myself looking at my watch at 4:00 PM, anxious to return to the sound of laughter, home-cooked meals, and the sight of Elise sitting at the kitchen island.
One evening, after the girls were put to bed, I found Elise standing on the back terrace, looking out over the moonlit gardens. The spring air was cool, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine.
I walked out, carrying two glasses of red wine, handing one to her.
"Thank you," she said, accepting the glass with a warm smile. "It's a beautiful night."
"It is," I agreed, leaning against the stone balustrade beside her. "I realized today that I haven't thanked you properly."
She raised an eyebrow, amused. "For what?"
"For bringing my daughters back to life," I said, looking at her profile in the moonlight. "And... for bringing me back to life, too."
Elise turned to face me, her cheeks flushing slightly. "You did that yourself, Julian. You just needed to grant yourself permission to breathe again."
We stood close, the space between us shrinking until I could feel the gentle warmth radiating from her body. My eyes dropped to her lips, and for a brief, electric second, I saw her breath catch as she leaned in slightly toward me.
The desire to pull her into my arms, to kiss her, was overwhelming.
Before our lips could touch, my phone buzzed sharply in my pocket.
The moment vanished like smoke. I pulled out the phone, seeing Viktor's name on the caller ID.
"Julian," Viktor said, his voice flat and urgent. "We just intercepted an encrypted transmission from the Moretti network. They've located Julian Vance's original financial ledgers. He didn't destroy them before he disappeared... he hid them in a safety deposit box at the Central Commerce Bank downtown."
My eyes widened. "The proof against Anthony Moretti?"
"Yes," Viktor confirmed. "And Dominic Moretti’s men are planning to hit the bank tomorrow morning before the court opens to retrieve and destroy those ledgers."
May you like
I looked at Elise, whose eyes were filled with sudden anxiety.
"If we get those ledgers first," I said into the phone, "we can put Anthony and Dominic Moretti behind bars for the rest of their natural lives."
