Chapter 12 - The Breach

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the foyer as the decorative side panels gave way. Heavy footsteps invaded the polished hardwood floor of the entrance hall.

I scrambled back toward the base of the stairs, reaching into the hidden compartment behind the stair post to pull out a heavy tactical flashlight and a stun baton. I was not a violent man, but I was a father, and there was nothing on this earth I wouldn't do to protect the innocent lives sleeping upstairs.

Two men dressed in dark tactical gear stepped through the broken door, followed closely by a figure in a worn coat.

When the light from the chandelier hit his face, I barely recognized Julian. The once-pompous, sharply dressed heir to our family’s corporate empire was gaunt, his cheeks sunken, his eyes burning with a wild, unhinged intensity. A jagged scar ran from his ear down to his jawline—a souvenir from his time behind bars.

"Look at this," Julian sneered, casting his eyes over the high ceilings, the warm artwork, and the elegant decor of my home. "You rebuilt paradise on the ashes of my life. You took my inheritance, you took my reputation, and you built a happy little family while I ate slop off a metal tray."

"You destroyed your own life, Julian," I said, holding the stun baton ready, my stance low and solid. "You stole from the trust, you compromised the family business, and you hired men to intimidate my wife. You earned every single day of that sentence."

"I was entitled to that money!" Julian screamed, his composure snapping like a dry twig. "Dad loved you more, gave you everything, and left me with crumbs! But that ends tonight. Where are the deeds? Where are the bearer bonds from the offshore liquidations?"

"There are no bearer bonds, Julian. Everything was transferred into a public charitable foundation and a trust for the children. You're chasing ghosts."

"Search the house!" Julian barked at the two hired thugs beside him. "Find the safe! And bring the wife down here. Let's see how brave he is when he has to watch her bleed."

One of the men made a move toward the stairs.

I didn't hesitate. I lunged forward, thrusting the stun baton directly into the man's chest. Fifty thousand volts of electricity surged through his tactical vest, sending him crashing backward onto the floor, twitching violently.

The second thug pulled a heavy metal crowbar from his belt and swung it wildy at my head. I ducked beneath the arc, feeling the rush of air overhead, and slammed the heavy metal casing of the tactical flashlight into his knee. Bone cracked, and the man let out a agonizing howl, dropping to his hands and knees.

Julian watched in shock as his two hired muscle were neutralized in seconds. He backed away toward the broken front door, pulling a small silver revolver from his coat pocket.

"You always were the lucky one, weren't you?" Julian snarled, pointing the gun straight at my chest. "Let's see if your luck holds out against lead."

Before he could pull the trigger, a loud, piercing siren echoed through the long driveway outside. High-powered spotlights illuminated the foyer through the broken front doors, sweeping across Julian's terrified face.

"Police! Drop your weapon! Drop it now!" a voice boomed over a bullhorn from outside.

Julian glanced wildly over his shoulder. Red and blue strobe lights painted the shattered entrance in violent shades of neon. He looked back at me, his eyes filled with pure, unfiltered malice.

"This isn't over," Julian whispered. "You can't protect them forever."

He turned and bolted out the side entrance into the pitch-black garden, vanishing into the treeline just as heavily armed police officers breached the main entrance.
