Chapter 4 - The Fortress Within

The motorcade turned around, its red taillights disappearing into the stormy night down the winding mountain road.

I stood at the gate for a long time, letting the rain soak through my suit jacket, cooling the burning fury inside my head.

"Increase perimeter security by double," I told Viktor as we walked back toward the mansion. "Deploy thermal sensors along the southern ridge. Nobody enters this property without my personal authorization."

"Understood, boss," Viktor said grimly. "What about the nanny?"

"She stays," I snapped. "She’s an innocent caught in their crosshairs. Her brother died trying to stop them. We protect her."

When I returned to the nursery, the heavy steel security door was locked tight, just as I had ordered. I typed the master passcode into the digital keypad, and the heavy door unlatched with a soft pneumatic hiss.

Inside, the room was dimly lit by the nightlight.

Elise was sitting on the floor between the two cribs, clutching a heavy brass candlestick holder like a club, her body trembling with tension. Maisie and Rosie were fast asleep, completely unaware of the danger that had hovered over their home.

When Elise saw me step into the room, the candlestick holder slipped from her hand, thudding softly against the carpet. She let out a ragged breath, collapsing back against the wooden frame of the crib.

"They're gone," I said gently, closing the door behind me. "You're safe."

She buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking as silent sobs broke through her composure.

I walked over, kneeling on the floor beside her. For a man who had spent years maintaining absolute emotional distance from everyone, touching her felt like crossing a threshold I could never return from. I reached out, my fingers wrapping gently around her trembling wrist, pulling her hands away from her face.

"Hey," I whispered, forcing her to look at me. "Look at me, Elise."

She raised her tear-stained eyes to mine.

"As long as you are under this roof, no one will ever harm you," I promised, my voice filled with an unshakeable, absolute conviction. "I give you my word."

Elise stared into my eyes, her breath hitching. In that quiet, dimly lit nursery, surrounded by the soft breathing of my sleeping daughters, a silent bond was forged between us—a pact forged in shared tragedy and a desperate need to protect the life we had left.

"Thank you, Julian," she whispered softly, using my first name for the very first time.
