Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Pierce

The scandal broke like a thermonuclear warhead across the global financial markets.
By six o'clock the following morning, the video of Clara Hayes confronting the Pierces at the Art Institute was trending at number one worldwide. The wire transfer documents proving Evelyn Pierce had bribed a doctor to falsify a paternity test were leaked to the Chicago Tribune and the Wall Street Journal.
The fallout was instantaneous and brutal.
By 9:00 AM, the board of directors at Pierce Global Logistics called an emergency meeting. Facing massive public outcry, boycotts from major shipping unions, and a federal investigation into bribery and fraud, the board voted unanimously to strip Evelyn Pierce of her chairmanship and remove Gregory Pierce as CEO.
By noon, the company’s stock crashed by forty-five percent.
At 3:00 PM, Gabriel Falco executed his final move. Utilizing his vast cash reserves and controlling interest in the Port Authority, Gabriel launched a hostile takeover, buying up the plummeting Pierce stock at bottom-barrel prices. By the time Wall Street closed, Gabriel Falco owned seventy percent of Pierce Global Logistics.
The enemy had not just been defeated; they had been erased.
Late that afternoon, a sleek black car pulled up to the gates of Gabriel’s Lincoln Park estate.
Gregory Pierce stepped out of the vehicle. He looked hollowed out, his suit rumpled, his hair unkempt, his eyes bloodshot from crying and exhaustion. He walked up the stone steps and begged the security guards to let him speak to Clara for just five minutes.
The heavy iron front doors opened.
Gabriel Falco walked out onto the porch, looking down at the ruined man standing on his steps.
"Where is she?" Gregory sobbed, looking past Gabriel toward the house. "Gabriel, please! I’ve lost everything! The company, my reputation, my mother is facing jail time! Just let me see my son! Let me apologize to Clara!"
Gabriel walked slowly down the steps, stopping two feet above Gregory.
"You don't have a son, Gregory," Gabriel said calmly.
Gregory blinked, tears streaming down his bruised face. "What... what are you talking about? You showed the DNA test! He’s mine!"
"Biologically, perhaps," Gabriel replied, his voice cold as mountain ice. "But a father is not the man whose blood runs in a child's veins. A father is the man who shields the child from the storm. A father is the man who stays when the world turns dark."
Gabriel pulled a set of legal papers from his coat pocket and tossed them at Gregory’s chest.
"These are full termination of parental rights documents, along with a permanent restraining order," Gabriel stated. "Sign them, and I will leave you enough Pierce stock to keep you from sleeping on the street. Refuse, and I will press criminal charges for attempted murder for throwing a pregnant woman out into a sub-zero storm."
Gregory looked at the papers, then looked up at Gabriel’s terrifying, unyielding face. He knew he had no leverage, no money, and no power left.
With shaking hands, Gregory took the pen Gabriel offered, pressed the paper against the stone pillar, and signed his name away.

He dropped the pen, looking up at the high windows of the estate one last time, weeping as he realized he had traded his own legacy for his mother’s arrogance. He turned around and stumbled away into the cold afternoon air, broken and forgotten.
Gabriel watched him leave, then turned and walked back inside his home.
