Chapter 4 - The Art of Execution

The Grand Staircase of the Art Institute of Chicago was draped in white orchids, silver ribbons, and velvet carpets.

Inside the glass-domed atrium, five hundred of the country's most powerful political figures, industrial titans, and high-society royalty gathered under the gleaming lights. Photographers’ flashes flickered continuously like artificial lightning.

At the center of the room stood Evelyn Pierce, looking immaculate in a floor-length emerald silk gown, sipping champagne beside her son, Gregory, and his new fiancée, Victoria Sterling.

"You look distracted, Gregory," Evelyn remarked smoothly, setting her glass on a passing server's tray.

"I'm fine, Mother," Gregory said, adjusting his bowtie. Yet his eyes kept darting nervously toward the main entrance. For the past three days, he had been feeling an odd, unsettling sensation—like someone was watching his every move.

"Everything is perfect," Evelyn reassured him, tapping his cheek gently with her diamond-encrusted fan. "The Pierce-Sterling merger will be finalized on Monday. The press loves Victoria. That little suburban mistake from last month is ancient history."

"Speaking of history," Victoria chimed in with a sweet, shallow laugh, "did you hear that Gabriel Falco bought out the remaining shares of the Port Authority today? The board is saying he now controls sixty percent of all shipping lanes coming through the city."

Gregory’s face darkened. "Falco is a parasite. He thinks because he has cash he can buy respect. But he'll never have our lineage."

Suddenly, the music stopped.

The chatter in the massive atrium died down to a sudden, striking hush. The photographers near the grand entrance turned their lenses away from the stage, pointing them down the long red carpet.

A heavy, commanding step echoed across the marble floor.

Gabriel Falco entered the ballroom.

He was striking in a charcoal tuxedo, his presence effortlessly commanding the attention of every person in the room. But it was not Gabriel that caused five hundred people to hold their breath.

It was the woman on his arm.

Clara Hayes moved across the red carpet like a queen entering her court.

She wore a custom, high-fashion silk gown of deep midnight blue that hugged her magnificent, seven-month pregnant curve with regal pride. Her dark hair was styled in intricate, soft waves adorned with delicate sapphire pins. Around her neck sat a breathtaking vintage diamond necklace that had once belonged to European royalty—a piece from Gabriel’s private vault. Her skin was glowing, her posture immaculate, her hazel eyes burning with an unshakeable, terrifying confidence.

Gregory Pierce dropped his champagne glass.

The crystal shattered against the marble floor with a loud, ringing crash. Champagne splashed over his shoes, but he didn't even notice. His face drained of every ounce of blood, turning a sickly, ghostly white.

"Clara...?" Gregory choked out, his voice barely a squeak.

Evelyn Pierce’s fan dropped from her hand. Her aristocratic composure shattered into a thousand jagged pieces as she stared at the woman she had thrown out into a storm three weeks ago—now standing on the arm of the most dangerous man in Chicago.

"Impossible..." Evelyn whispered, her throat dry. "She... she was..."

Gabriel and Clara glided smoothly across the floor, the crowd parting for them like the Red Sea. They stopped directly in front of the frozen Pierce family.

"Good evening, Gregory," Clara said, her voice smooth, warm, and echoing clearly in the quiet ballroom. "Mrs. Pierce. You both look so... surprised to see me."

"Clara..." Gregory stammered, taking an involuntary step forward, his eyes wildly scanning her radiant face, her diamond necklace, and the clear, healthy swell of her belly. "You're... you're alive? How... where have you been?!"

"Miss Hayes has been under my personal care," Gabriel answered smoothly, slipping his hand behind Clara’s waist, his grip possessive and protective. "Where else would a woman go when she discovers her fiancé is a coward who buys fake medical reports?"

The surrounding guests gasped softly. Hundreds of ears strained to catch every word.

"That's a lie!" Evelyn hissed, stepping forward, her eyes wide with panic as she noticed several high-profile journalists creeping closer with microphones. "Security! Remove these intruders immediately!"

"I wouldn't advise that, Evelyn," Gabriel said, pulling a thin black leather folder from inside his jacket. "Unless you want me to hand this to the federal prosecutors standing by the bar."

Gabriel opened the folder, holding it up so Gregory and Evelyn could see the top page.

It was a sworn affidavit signed by Dr. Marcus Thorne of Lakeshore Genetics, complete with bank transfer receipts showing a two-million-dollar wire from Evelyn Pierce’s offshore account to Thorne’s account in the Cayman Islands—dated twenty-four hours before Clara’s eviction.

Beside it sat a certified, official DNA test conducted by the Chief of Fetal Medicine at Northwestern Memorial—showing a 99.9% biological match between the child Clara was carrying and Gregory Pierce.

Gregory stared at the papers, his mind spinning into complete chaos. He looked at his mother, seeing the guilty terror in her eyes, then looked back at Clara.

"Mother... you... you forged it?" Gregory gasped, realization crashing over him like a tidal wave. "The baby... the baby really is mine?"

"Of course he’s yours, you fool!" Clara said, her voice dropping into a knife-sharp blade. "But you didn't care about the truth, did you, Gregory? You were too weak to stand up to your mother. You threw your own child out into a freezing storm without shoes, without a coat, hoping the night would murder us both!"

The ballroom erupted into loud, horrified whispers. Photographers began flashing their cameras frantically, capturing Gregory’s pale, trembling face and Clara’s majestic, triumphant stance.

"Clara, please!" Gregory cried out, reaching for her hand in absolute desperation. "I didn't know! She tricked me! Clara, I love you! Come back to me... that's my heir you're carrying!"

Before Gregory’s hand could touch her, Gabriel stepped firmly into his path.

Gabriel grabbed Gregory’s wrist in an iron grip, squeezing until Gregory groaned in pain. Gabriel leaned in, his amber eyes flashing with a terrifying, lethal promise.

"Touch her again," Gabriel whispered softly, "and I will tear Pierce Global apart piece by piece before the sun rises."
