Chapter 1 - The Predator in the Alley

The vibration wasn’t coming from the storm. It vibrated up through the concrete, through the freezing mud, and into Clara Hayes’s bone marrow—a low, rhythmic rumble that sounded like a mechanical beast cutting through the tempest.

Twin beams of piercing white light sliced through the darkness of the alleyway, illuminating the falling rain into a sheet of liquid silver.

Clara raised her mud-streaked face from the pavement, her teeth clicking together so hard her jaw felt bruised. Through the blur of icy water and her own failing vision, she saw the silhouette of a massive vehicle. A black armored Maybach Pullman, long as a hearse and completely imperious to the gale, ground to a halt just inches from her outstretched, shivering feet.

For a terrifying second, Clara thought Gregory had sent someone to finish her. He had warned her he would ruin her completely.

The rear door clicked open.

A custom Italian leather shoe, immaculate despite the sludge, stepped out onto the flooded pavement. Then came a tailored charcoal topcoat, heavy and dark as midnight.

The man who emerged did not rush. He held an unyielding black umbrella, the wind roaring around him without so much as disturbing a single strand of his dark, silver-touched hair. He stood over six feet two inches tall, broad-shouldered, with features carved from harsh, unforgiving granite. His eyes were not warm; they were a startling, icy amber that caught the ambient glare of the streetlights like a predator hunting in the dark.

Gabriel Falco.

In Chicago, the name was whispered in boardroom corners and whispered even lower in the shadows of the docks. Where the Pierces represented old, clean, polished money wrapped in polite political influence, Gabriel Falco represented absolute, unchecked corporate dominance. He owned the shipping yards, the private security networks, and the debt of half the city’s elite. The Pierces called him a barbarian in a three-piece suit. Gabriel called the Pierces prey.

Gabriel looked down at the shivering figure crumpled against the dumpster. His expression remained utterly unreadable, void of pity or shock. To Gabriel, human suffering was simply a variable in an equation.

"Get her up," Gabriel commanded. His voice was a quiet, deep baritone that easily cut through the howling wind.

Two towering men in black tactical coats stepped out from the front seats. They didn't drag her, but their grips were iron as they pulled Clara up from the freezing mud.

Clara gasped, a jagged cry tearing from her throat as another sharp contraction seized her abdomen. "No... please... don't hurt my baby..." She clutched her stomach with one hand, her knuckles white.

In her other hand, wet, crumpled, and plastered against her palm by rain and blood, was the manila envelope Evelyn Pierce had forced upon her.

Gabriel’s amber eyes flicked down. His sharp gaze caught the blue embossed foil crest on the soaked corner of the paper.

Pierce Global Logistics.

Gabriel’s eyebrow twitched imperceptibly. He reached out with two gloved fingers and snatched the envelope from her frozen grip. He pulled out the damp document inside. Even in the dim light of the alley, his eyes absorbed the crucial details in seconds: Lakeshore Genetics... Paternity Analysis... Subject: Clara Hayes... Result: 0%.

A slow, dangerous smile curved the corner of Gabriel Falco’s lips. It was not a smile of kindness. It was the thrill of a general discovering a gaping hole in his enemy’s front lines.

"Gregory Pierce’s pregnant fiancée," Gabriel murmured, looking back down at Clara. "Thrown out like trash on Oak Street."

"Please..." Clara choked out, her knees giving way again. Her vision was turning black around the edges, the cold penetrating her internal organs. "The hospital... my baby..."

Gabriel caught her before she hit the ground, his heavy wool coat wrapping around her wet, freezing form. The warmth radiating from him was shock to her system.

"Not a hospital," Gabriel said calmly, lifting her into his arms as easily as if she were a child. "If Gregory Pierce wanted you dead in a ditch, a public hospital is where he’ll look first to clear his tracks."

He carried her into the back of the Maybach. The interior smelled of expensive leather, cedar, and aged bourbon. Heat blasted from the vents immediately, wrapping around Clara’s hypothermic body.

"Where to, Boss?" the driver asked, slamming the front door.

Gabriel looked at the woman passed out against the leather seats, her pale skin translucent, her lips a faint shade of blue, her arms still locked fiercely in a protective circle around her womb.

"To the Medical Suite at the Estate," Gabriel ordered, staring out the tinted glass as the Maybach roared back into the storm. "Call Dr. Vance. Tell him I’m bringing him a miracle."
