Chapter 2 - The Lion’s Den

The world returned to Clara in fragments of white light, the sterile scent of antiseptic mixed with expensive lavender, and the rhythmic, steady beep... beep... beep... of a heart monitor.

She jolted awake with a ragged gasp, her hands instantly flying down to her stomach.

"Easy, Miss Hayes. Easy."

A gentle hand pressed onto her shoulder, guiding her back onto the plush, adjustable mattress. Clara blinked frantically, her chest heaving.

She was in a massive, hyper-modern medical room. But it didn't look like a county hospital. The walls were lined with dark walnut paneling, soft warm lighting recessed into the ceiling, and through a set of floor-to-ceiling windows, she could see the dawn light breaking over the choppy, gray horizon of Lake Michigan.

"My baby..." she choked out, tears instantly filling her eyes. "Is my baby—"

"Your baby is alive and stable," a calm voice answered.

An older man in a crisp white lab coat adjusted the IV bag hooked into her arm. "You suffered severe hypothermia and early braxton-hicks contractions brought on by physical shock and extreme stress. If you had spent ten more minutes in that storm, you would have lost the child. As it stands, your cervix is closed, the fetal heart rate is strong, and we have stabilized your temperature."

Clara collapsed back onto the pillows, sobbing in pure, unadulterated relief. She cupped her belly with both hands, feeling the faint, subtle flutter of a kick from within. Thank you, God. Thank you.

"I suggest you conserve your strength, Miss Hayes," another voice spoke from the corner of the room. "You have a war to prepare for."

Clara turned her head sharply.

Sitting in a high-backed leather armchair near the window was the man from the alley. He had removed his topcoat, revealing a perfectly tailored navy suit and a white dress shirt with the top button unfastened. A crystal tumbler of dark liquor sat on the small table beside him. He was watching her with an intensity that made Clara’s breath hitch.

"Who are you?" Clara whispered, pulling the heavy cashmere blanket higher up her chest. "Why am I here?"

Gabriel set his glass down. He stood up, walking slowly toward the side of her bed. His presence filled the room, heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

"My name is Gabriel Falco," he said.

Clara’s eyes widened slightly. Even living in her quiet world, she had heard the name. Gregory had brought up Gabriel Falco during dinner parties—always with a sneer, always calling him a 'thug with a bank account' who was trying to steal Pierce Global’s shipping contracts at the Port of Chicago.

"You're... Gregory's rival," Clara realized, her voice trembling.

"I am the man who is going to destroy Gregory Pierce," Gabriel corrected smoothly. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the ruined, damp document from Lakeshore Genetics, tossing it onto the foot of her bed. "And you, Clara, are the weapon he handed me on a silver platter."

Clara looked at the paper, her fear instantly hardening into a flash of defensive anger. "I am not a weapon. I am a human being. And my baby is not a bargaining chip!"

Gabriel didn't flinch at her outburst. He merely tilted his head, studying her flushed cheeks and fierce eyes with a hint of quiet fascination.

"You think I dragged you out of that alley out of charity?" Gabriel asked coldly. "If I had left you there, Gregory would have announced your 'unfortunate disappearance' by noon today. His mother, Evelyn, would have spun a quiet narrative about a unstable woman who ran off into the night. Your name would be erased, and the Pierce family would continue their multi-billion-dollar expansion without a scratch."

Clara swallowed hard. The brutal truth of his words hit her like a physical blow. She knew Evelyn Pierce. She knew the terrifying reach of the Pierce family’s money. Gregory wouldn't just move on—he would make sure she didn't exist to challenge them.

"The test is fake," Clara said, her voice shaking with quiet conviction, looking directly into Gabriel’s amber eyes. "I swear to you on my life. I have never been with another man. Gregory is the father. Evelyn bought that clinic."

"I know," Gabriel said flatly.

Clara blinked, caught off guard. "You... you believe me?"

"I don't need to 'believe' you, Clara," Gabriel replied, leaning over the guardrail of her bed, his face inches from hers. "I know Lakeshore Genetics. The lead pathologist, Dr. Marcus Thorne, owes two million dollars to a gambling syndicate in Macau. Evelyn Pierce paid off his debt three days ago. I had my men pull his bank records while you were sleeping."

Clara stared at him, stunned. "You already investigated it?"

"Information is power, Miss Hayes," Gabriel said softly. "The Pierces think they are gods because they have old money. But old money makes people lazy. They think a cheap forgery and a cold night will solve their problems."

He straightened up, buttoning his jacket.

"Here is my offer," Gabriel stated, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. "You stay here, in my private estate on Gold Coast. My doctors will monitor your pregnancy. My security will keep you invisible to the world. In exchange, when the time is right, you will help me tear Pierce Global Logistics down to the bedrock."

Clara held his stare, her heart hammering against her ribs. "And what do I get out of this? I don't care about your corporate wars, Mr. Falco. I only care about protecting my child."

May you like

Gabriel looked at her belly, then back into her eyes. For a split second, the coldness in his amber eyes thawed into something dark and solemn.

"You get justice, Clara," Gabriel whispered. "And when we are finished, Gregory Pierce will be on his knees, begging you for the very child he threw into the mud."
