Chapter 9 - The Long Arm of the Law

Before Mark or Vanessa could run for the exit, the side doors of the ballroom burst open. District Attorney Richard Cole marched in, accompanied by four uniformed police officers and two federal investigators.
"Vanessa Cole," Richard said, his voice booming with cold, professional detachment. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, insurance fraud, and corporate embezzlement. The medical board has officially stripped your license effective five minutes ago."
The officers stepped forward, slamming Vanessa’s arms behind her back and clicking the silver handcuffs over her white gown. She screamed, cursing her husband, her glamorous facade completely shattering into a pathetic, hysterical mess.
Mark tried to slip into the crowd, but two officers immediately blocked his path, grabbing him by the shoulders.
"Mark Bennett," the officer announced. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny and criminal elder neglect."
"Claire! Please!" Mark yelled, his voice cracking as he was dragged past his wife, his face wet with tears of terrified desperation. "I was sick! The headaches made me crazy! Vanessa manipulated me! You love me, Claire! You can't do this to me!"

Claire stood perfectly still, watching him get dragged away in handcuffs, his expensive tuxedo wrinkled and ruined. She took a slow, deep breath, feeling the absolute weight of twenty-two years of manipulation and unappreciated sacrifice completely melt away from her shoulders.
"The white cactus flower was right, Jenna," Claire whispered to her coworker, who was watching from the crowd with tears of joy. "My life just changed forever."
