Chapter 2 - The Medical Mirage

Northgate Neurology Center was quiet when Claire walked through the glass doors. The receptionist was away from her desk. Claire didn't hesitate; she walked straight past the security barrier, utilizing the knowledge she had gained from accompanying Mark to his early appointments.
She marched down the corridor toward Vanessa’s private office. The door was locked, but Claire knew from her years as an archivist that facilities like this kept backup paper records and digital logs in the central filing room near the imaging suite.
Using her librarian's calm demeanor, she slipped into the archival room. She found the cabinet labeled B and pulled out Mark’s medical file.
As her eyes scanned the pages, the room seemed to tilt.
There was no brain stem abnormality. There were no imported medications. According to the internal lab reports signed by a technician who had later been fired, Mark’s MRI scans were entirely pristine. The "specialized infusions" she had been sweating blood to pay for were nothing more than saline solution mixed with standard B-vitamins.
But the real horror lay at the bottom of the financial summary.
The $120,000 loan Claire had taken out, using her parents' house as collateral, had been routed through the clinic's billing system and immediately transferred into a private, offshore shell company registered under two names: Mark Bennett and Vanessa Cole.
They hadn't just been having an affair. They had invented a terminal illness to systematically drain Claire of everything she owned, using her love and loyalty as a weapon to fund their new life together.

"Looking for something, Claire?"
Claire spun around. Standing in the doorway of the filing room was Dr. David Vance, the chief of medicine at Northgate.
