Chapter 6 - The Unholy Alliance
The next morning, Claire sat in a dimly lit corner booth of a diner on the edge of town. Sitting across from her was District Attorney Richard Cole—a powerful, sharp-jawed man in a tailored suit who looked like he hadn't slept in a week.
Claire pushed the fraudulent medical file, the cassette tape, and the offshore bank routing numbers across the table.
"Your wife is stealing from me to pay off her hidden liabilities, Mr. Cole," Claire said calmly, taking a sip of her black coffee. "And my idiot husband thinks they’re running away to Florida together."
Richard Cole read through the documents, his face turning an angry, ash-gray color. His fist clenched on the table, rattling the silverware. "Vanessa told me this money was from a private medical research grant. She told me she was saving our family firm from liquidation."
"She’s saving your firm using the equity of my parents' house," Claire replied, leaning forward. "Tomorrow night is the Northgate Neurology Annual Gala. Every major donor, the medical board, and the press will be there. Mark thinks he’s attending as Vanessa’s special guest to celebrate their 'investment victory.' I want them both destroyed, Mr. Cole. Legally, financially, and socially."

The District Attorney looked up, his eyes turning as cold as ice. He slid the files back into his briefcase and stood up.
"Mrs. Bennett, my office will handle the criminal warrants. You just make sure you wear your best dress to that gala. I’ll provide the fireworks."
