Chapter 8 - The True Awakening

Two weeks passed. The fourteen-day countdown had arrived and gone, but instead of a funeral, the Whitmore estate was celebrating a rebirth.

The morning sun streamed through the large windows of Owen's room. The hospital bed and the monitors were completely gone, replaced by his original, comfortable furniture. Owen was sitting at his writing desk, wearing a fresh sweater, his skin healthy and vibrant, a brilliant smile on his face as he looked over a map of Lake Michigan.

Clara walked into the room, carrying a tray with a fresh, steaming bowl of oatmeal and berries.

"You know, I was promised red velvet cake every day if I survived," Owen teased, looking up at her with genuine affection.

"You get real food now that your heart can handle it," Clara laughed, setting the tray down. She looked out the window, where Nathan was walking through the garden, talking animatedly on his phone—not about stocks or deals, but ordering a brand-new sailboat for his son.

Owen’s expression softened as he watched his father. "He’s different now, Clara. He comes in here every night. We talked about Mom last night for three hours. We laughed. I haven't heard him laugh since I was a kid."

"He was just lost in the dark, Owen," Clara said softly, resting a hand on his shoulder. "He just needed someone to turn the light back on."

"No," Owen said, reaching up to gently touch her hand. "He didn't need just anyone. He needed you. We both did."
