Chapter 6 - The Midnight Lab

By 2:00 AM, the second-floor suite of the Whitmore mansion was transformed into a high-tech medical laboratory. Dr. Robert Chen, a brilliant, independent toxicologist and cardiologist, walked out of Owen’s room, removing his latex gloves.
Nathan and Clara were standing side by side in the hallway, their anxiety palpable in the dim light.
"Mr. Whitmore," Dr. Chen said, his expression incredibly grave. "Miss Bennett’s intuition was entirely correct. Your son’s blood work shows toxic levels of synthetic beta-blockers. It’s a condition called induced bradycardia mimicry. Dr. Pierce wasn't treating a failing heart; he was systematically poisoning it to make it appear as though it were failing. If he had stayed on this regimen for another forty-eight hours, his heart would have stopped entirely, and an autopsy would have simply listed it as natural cardiac arrest."
Nathan leaned against the wall, a wave of sickening guilt washing over him. He had almost let his own brother murder his son because he was too afraid to look past his own grief.
He looked at Clara, who was watching him with tears in her eyes. "Is he... can we fix it?" Nathan whispered, his voice cracking.

"We’ve already started him on an aggressive intravenous detox protocol to flush the toxins from his system," Dr. Chen explained, a reassuring smile breaking across his face. "Owen's underlying heart condition is actually mild—a treatable arrhythmia that can be corrected with a standard, non-invasive pacemaker insertion. He doesn't have two weeks to live, Mr. Whitmore. With the right care, your son is going to live for another sixty years."
Nathan let out a ragged, choked sob—the first cry he had allowed himself in ten long years. Without thinking, he reached out, and Clara stepped into his arms, holding him tightly as the billionaire finally let the ice around his heart melt away.
