Chapter 9 - The Velvet Box

That evening, the grand mansion was quiet, the sky painted in deep hues of purple and orange as the sun set over Lake Michigan.

The three of them sat on the massive rug in the center of the grand living room, a fire crackling merrily in the hearth. Lauren was sitting between Andrew’s knees, carefully arranging her small blue Bible, her white handkerchief, and the old newspaper clipping on the coffee table.

“Daddy,” Lauren said, looking up at him with her serious brown eyes. “We need one more thing for the bag.”

Andrew smiled, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, elegant velvet box. He didn't hand it to Lauren; he turned to Mary, who was sitting beside them, her breath catching as he opened it.

Inside was a stunning, brilliant engagement ring featuring a massive pear-shaped diamond that caught the firelight like a fallen star.

“Mary Grace Fitzgerald,” Andrew said, his voice rich with an unshakeable emotion as he took her hand. “I spent five years chasing a shadow because I thought wealth was the only way to protect the people I loved. But you and Lauren showed me that the only true protection is being here. I don't want to be a king in a glass tower anymore. I want to be a husband to you, a father to our beautiful girl, and a man who deserves the faith you never lost. Will you marry me?”

Mary let out a loud, joyous cry, tears of pure happiness spilling down her cheeks as she threw her arms around his neck. “Yes, Andrew! A million times, yes!”

Andrew slid the diamond ring onto her finger, pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their new destiny forever.
