Chapter 5 - The Medical Crisis

At 4:15 AM, the peaceful silence of the penthouse suite was shattered by a sharp, rhythmic beeping from the neurological monitor. The line indicating intracranial pressure suddenly spiked into a dangerous, jagged crimson waveform.

Andrew snapped awake, instantly shielding Lauren as three nurses and Dr. Catherine Vance rushed into the room, their faces grim under the harsh fluorescent lights.

“What’s happening, Catherine?” Andrew demanded, his voice tight with raw panic.

“The hematoma is shifting,” Dr. Vance said, her fingers flying across the control panel as she checked Mary's pupillary reflex. “The swelling isn't subsiding; it’s putting direct pressure on the brainstem. Her heart rate is dropping. We can’t wait twenty-four hours, Andrew. We have to operate now.”

The nurses immediately began unlocking the wheels of the bed, preparing to rush Mary toward the surgical pavilion.

Lauren woke up, her little face crumpling into terror as she saw the doctors surrounding her mother. “Mommy! No! Don't take her!”

Andrew stood up, scooping Lauren into his arms, holding her tightly against his neck as the bed was rolled out into the hallway at a frantic sprint. He followed them down the long, white corridor, his heart pounding against his ribs like a trapped animal. He had all the money in the world, enough to buy the very ground this hospital stood on, but as the double doors of the operating room swung shut, leaving him standing in the cold hallway, he realized his billions were entirely worthless.

He dropped to his knees on the polished linoleum floor, still holding Lauren against his chest.

“Lauren,” Andrew whispered, his voice cracking with an overwhelming, desperate grief. “Do you remember what you asked me in the park? About whether I believed in God?”

Lauren nodded, her cheeks wet with tears as she clutched her small fabric bag.

“I remember now,” Andrew sobbed, pressing his forehead against hers. “I remember. Help me say it, sweetie. Help me ask Him to bring her back.”

Together, the billionaire and the little girl sat in the empty, sterile hallway of the hospital, their voices rising in a quiet, desperate prayer that ignored the ticking clocks of the city and went straight into the dark.
