Chapter 8 - The Transformation

Three weeks passed, and the bitter winter wind of Chicago gave way to a beautiful, crisp spring morning.

The Whitmore estate in Lake Forest—a massive, historic mansion surrounded by ancient oaks and high stone walls—was no longer a quiet, sterile fortress. The heavy iron gates were wide open, and the long, circular driveway was filled with the sounds of laughter.

A massive playground had been constructed on the south lawn, featuring a custom-built silver castle with a slide that curved down toward a pristine brick path.

Mary stood on the grand terrace, wearing a beautiful, comfortable linen dress, her hair flowing softly in the breeze. Her recovery had been flawless, her strength fully returned under the care of the private chefs and medical staff Andrew had brought to the estate.

Andrew walked up behind her, wearing a casual sweater and jeans—a look his corporate partners hadn't seen him wear in decades. He wrapped his powerful arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder as they watched Lauren sprint across the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy Andrew had bought her the day they left the hospital.

“The legal paperwork cleared this morning,” Andrew whispered, kissing the side of her neck. “The boarding house block downtown has been completely cleared. The foundation for the Lauren Fitzgerald Sanctuary park is being poured today.”

Mary turned around in his embrace, her hands resting against his chest, her eyes soft with an overwhelming love. “You don't have to rebuild the whole city for us, Andrew.”

“I’m not rebuilding it for the city, Mary,” Andrew said, his gaze locking onto hers with absolute devotion. “I’m rebuilding it for me. To remind myself every single day of what I almost lost.”
