Chapter 5 - The War for the Heir

The arrest of Arthur Cole sent shockwaves through the financial and political world, but the danger was far from over.

Two weeks had passed since the boardroom revelation. Arthur Cole was behind bars awaiting trial for corporate fraud and first-degree murder, but the remnants of his syndicate network were desperate. With billions of dollars in assets freezing across the city, the Cole family’s loyalists saw only one way out: eliminate the child who secured the Moretti bloodline.

It was a stormy Tuesday night when the attack came.

I was in the east wing nursery, tucking Emma into her bed. The storm outside was howling, rain lashing against the tall glass windows, echoing the night of the engagement party two weeks ago.

Suddenly, the lights in the estate went pitch black.

The emergency backup generators kicked in two seconds later, bathing the hallways in a dim, amber glow.

Before I could reach for the house phone, the heavy wooden doors of the nursery were kicked open.

Two men in dark tactical gear and ski masks burst into the room, silent and lethal, suppressed pistols raised.

I screamed, throwing my body over Emma’s small frame on the bed. "No! Please!"

"Grab the kid!" one of the men growled, stepping forward.

Before he could reach the bed, a dark figure dropped from the shadows near the doorway.

Alessandro.

He moved with terrifying, predatory speed. He seized the first gunman’s wrist, twisting it violently until the bone snapped with a sickening crack, disarming him in a fraction of a second. Before the second gunman could adjust his aim, Alessandro swept his leg, sending the man crashing heavily onto the hardwood floor, smashing his face against the side of a dresser.

Marcus burst into the room a second later, two guards behind him, securing the downed intruders within seconds.

"Clear!" Marcus yelled into his radio. "Perimeter secured! The remaining three suspects in the courtyard are neutralized!"

Alessandro stood over the unconscious hitmen, his chest heaving, his dark hair falling wildly over his forehead. He checked his hands, ensuring he wasn't injured, before turning his full attention toward us.

"Elena! Are you hurt?" he demanded, rushing to the side of the bed.

"We’re okay... we’re okay," I sobbed, clutching Emma against my chest. She was crying loudly, terrified by the noise and the dark.

Alessandro reached out, his big hands wrapping gently around my shoulders, pulling both me and Emma into his arms. The heat of his body, the intense, fierce scent of cedar and rain, wrapped around us like an impenetrable fortress.

"I’m sorry," Alessandro whispered into my hair, his voice trembling with a raw, desperate emotion I had never heard from him before. "I’m so sorry I brought this violence near you."

"You saved us," I wept, clinging to his jacket. "You saved my daughter."

Alessandro pulled back slightly, looking down into my eyes. In the dim amber light of the emergency lamps, his dark eyes were filled with an intensity that made the rest of the world fade into nothingness.

"I didn't just save my niece, Elena," he whispered, his thumb gently wiping a tear from my cheek. "I protected the woman I’ve been falling in love with for three long years."

My breath caught in my throat. I stared at him, my heart hammering wildly.

"Every day you walked into this house," Alessandro said softly, "every time I saw you quietly caring for this estate, keeping your head down while carrying the grief of losing Daniel... I wanted to reach out to you. I wanted to give you everything this world denied you. But I had to destroy the men who killed your husband first. I couldn't bring you into my heart until I knew you were safe."

"Alessandro..." I breathed, my hand rising to touch the side of his sharp jawline.

"I don't want you to be a maid in this house, Elena," he said, holding my gaze with absolute devotion. "I want you to be my partner. I want you to share this life with me. If you’ll have me."

I looked at his fierce, protective face, then down at Emma, who had stopped crying and was resting her small hand against Alessandro’s collar.

"Yes," I whispered, a brilliant, tearful smile breaking across my face. "Yes, Alessandro. Yes."
