Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Mansion

The scandal broke like a dam.

Within twenty minutes, Alessandro’s personal security force had cleared the ballroom, escorting three hundred humiliated, gossiping socialites out through the private side gates under strict non-disclosure orders. The grand Moretti estate, usually a sanctuary of quiet wealth and disciplined routine, felt like a war zone.

I sat in the small, plush armchair inside Alessandro’s private library on the second floor.

Emma was fast asleep in my arms, wrapped in a warm wool blanket Marcus had brought us. The fever had broken, leaving her small face flushed and peaceful. I brushed a damp curl away from her forehead, my own hands trembling as the adrenaline of the last hour finally began to leave my system.

The heavy mahogany doors opened, and Alessandro walked in.

He had removed his tuxedo jacket, unbuttoned his collar, and rolled his crisp white sleeves up to his elbows. He looked exhausted, but the lethal composure that made him feared across the eastern seaboard was fully back in place.

He carried a silver tray with a cup of hot chamomile tea and a glass of ice water, setting it down on the table beside my chair.

"Drink," he said quietly.

"Mr. Moretti, I... I should take Emma home," I stammered, trying to stand up. "My shift ended hours ago, and after what happened—"

"Sit down, Elena," he commanded, though his tone was entirely devoid of anger. He pulled a leather chair opposite me and sat down, leaning his forearms on his knees. "First of all, you aren't going home tonight. It’s midnight, it’s pouring rain, and your daughter is unwell."

"I can take a taxi—"

"The Cole family has deep pockets and very long arms, Elena," Alessandro interrupted, his dark eyes locking onto mine with alarming intensity. "Vanessa’s father, Arthur Cole, just left my driveway after a very loud, very public altercation. He knows you were the one who exposed his daughter’s fraudulent pregnancy. Do you really think it’s safe for you to walk into a dark apartment building in South Boston right now?"

Cold dread settled in my stomach. I knew how the world worked. Men like Arthur Cole didn't get mad at their daughters for lying; they got mad at the servants who caught them.

"I didn't mean to cause a war," I whispered, looking down at my daughter’s sleeping face. "Emma didn't understand what she was saying."

"Emma saved me from making the biggest mistake of my life," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a rough, low register. "If I had announced that pregnancy publicly, if I had signed the board agreements next week... Arthur Cole would have owned my company within six months. You and your daughter prevented a hostile takeover."

I looked up, startled by the admission. "So... I’m not fired?"

A tiny, almost imperceptible smile touched the corner of Alessandro’s lips. "Fired? Elena, you’re the only person in this entire house who told me the truth tonight."

He stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the rain-swept estate gardens.

"Vanessa and her father didn't come up with this plan on their own," Alessandro said, his voice hardening as he stared into the dark. "Arthur Cole is a coward. He doesn't have the stomach for a scheme this bold. Someone inside my own inner circle helped them organize this. Someone who knew the exact wording of my father’s trust."

I held my breath. "Who?"

"I don't know yet," Alessandro replied, turning back to face me. "But until I find out, this house is on high alert. You and Emma will stay in the east wing suites starting tonight. Marcus will guard your door."

"Mr. Moretti, I’m just a maid," I protested softly. "I clean the floors. I wash the linens. I can't live in the guest suites."

May you like

Alessandro walked over to my chair, stopping just inches away. He leaned down, his towering presence enveloping me in the faint scent of cedarwood, expensive rain, and pure authority.

"You aren't just a maid anymore, Elena," he said softly, his dark eyes searching my face with an intensity that made my heart leap into my throat. "You’re the woman who exposed a trap. And as long as you’re under my roof, nobody touches you or your child."
